Sharks
Author: Gary Lopez
Illustrator: Photo credit
Publisher: The Child's World
Copyright: 2007
Pages: 32
Age: 3rd grade
Picture Book
Themes: sharks, fish, under water.
Synopsis: This is an informational book to teach children about sharks and other under water creatures.
Personal Response: I liked reading Sharks by Gary Lopez. He makes this informational book fun and easy to read. He uses real photographs and illustrations to show different facts and statistics. He has a lot of information about sharks in the book, but he does not just list fact after fact he uses the illustrations as well as humor to explain. To describe the different parts of a shark he uses a diagram of one and uses captions and labels to describe what each part is. This is a lot better than writing paragraphs for each part of a shark.
My favorite part of the book is on one page, Lopez has an illustration of different people each one doing something different. On this page each person and thing has a label explaining that each thing is made from a part of the shark. For example, one guy driving has a shark tooth necklace. The tooth is clearly from a shark.
I liked reading this book because I learned a lot about sharks, like thousands are killed a year and used for things such as soil. I have always been interested in sharks, every year I watch shark week on Discovery Channel, but I also am terrified of them. This book allowed me to get a closer look into sharks without actually getting close to one.
