This book deals with the drop of a hand-picked platoon of airborne forces into Sicily. Their mission is to blow up a vital bridge behind a division of Panzer Grenadiers and so precent the orderly withdrawal of Axis forces to the mainland of Italy. The four sergeants have lived and fought together throughout the war. A tragic event early in themission leaves one of them in chrge of the entire operation and their task is made even more difficult by them having to work with the local Mafia.
Written ten years after The Cauldron and soon after Zeno's release from prison, this book is just as gritty and realistic. It's a bit more nihilistic, if that is possible.
