Vicki Tashman has always loved historical fiction. Inspiration struck when her daughter graduated from college and moved back home with 2 cats in tow. She imagined the cats belonging to Cleopatra and, wow, the stories they could tell! After researching many people in history, she settled on writing her first children's historical fiction book about Thomas Jefferson's dog, Buzzy, "Buzzy and Thomas Move into the President's House." Her 2nd book, "Dash and Victoria Find True Love" is about Queen Victoria's dog, Dash. Other books in the works are about Benjamin Franklin and his squirrel Mungo and the Wright Brothers and their dog Flyer.

I'm an anglophile, my daughter is a dog lover and we've been watching the Victoria series, so what better way to connect than with a book that focuses on Dash? This is a lovely book, with pretty illustrations and a lot of footnotes. I love the fact that the author did not try to Americanize the language of the era, but instead explained what the word meant in Victorian times. There is a link to a website where you can find more information about Victoria and her pets, and the back pages have a copy of Victoria's own drawing of Dash.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love the concept of this book – telling the story of an historical figure through the eyes of one of their pets. Since the book is designed for younger elementary children, it is a great introduction to the genre of historical fiction. The intended audience is those in kinder to grade 2 so it would most likely be used as a read-aloud rather than a read-alone for most in that age group. Children would probably be able to read the book alone by the end of second grade. There are not many historical fiction books for this age group that I am aware of, so Dash and Victoria Find True Love fills a niche.
Vicki Tashman does a great job of introducing new words and explaining spelling differences with definitions and explanations throughout the book. She tells the story in a way that young children can understand. She also includes a section of various facts about Queen Victoria at the close of the book. Wendy All’s colorful illustrations compliment the text well.
Dash and Victoria Find True Love could find its way into my K-12 Christian School library.
I want to thank Historical Tails Publishing and Vicki Tashman for the complimentary e-copy of Dash and Victoria Find True Love so that I could participate in the Launch Team.

As a fan of the PBS production Victoria, I was looking forward to reading this story from Queen Victoria's life. It is told from the point of view of Dash, Victoria's beloved spaniel. Dash is jealous of any attention Victoria might show her other pets, so when Prince Albert arrives, Dash fears he won't be the queen's favorite. Then an event happens that shows Dash that his fears were misplaced.
I very much enjoyed "Dash and Victoria Find True Love." I like how the author uses some British terminology with footnotes explaining the difference. She did Americanize the spelling of some British words (having the British spelling in the footnotes) which disappointed me as an adult reading it; however, this will benefit younger readers who are not used to the different spellings. I would definitely recommend this book for readers in grades 2-4.
We are proud to announce that DASH AND VICTORIA FIND TRUE LOVE by Vicki Tashman is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells readers that this book is well worth their time and money!
Dash was a dog of queen Victoria. She loved the queen and they did everything together. One day she met her cousin Prince Albert. Dash was not at all happy. Dash wanted to be the only one loved and could not allow anyone else near the queen. Through this historical fiction tale, Dash learns to make room in his heart for another.
Pros: This book was about friendship and sharing. Dash learned how to make room in hear heart for more then one person.
This book not only told the tale through history, but it also included a lot of footnotes helping children understand what they were reading. I loved the explanations throughout the book rather at the end. This allowed the children to learn more about history.
For children who wanted to go deeper then just the tale, this book included some interesting facts in the end.
Cons: I know this might sound a bit petty, but I am not sure how strong the title is. I would say this book is more about friendship then love.
My Overall Opinion: I really enjoyed this book. It has the perfect combination of history and fiction. Enough to keep the children wanting to read while learning at the same time. A yes in my book

Such a sweet story. I love learning about Victoria, and this is a great introduction for kids. I love her sweet puppy named Dash, I ended up using it for my king Charles spaniel puppy.
