The Great Gatsby [with New Illustrations Added] is a novel by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. First published in 1925, it is set on Long Island's North Shore and in New York City from spring to autumn of 1922.
The novel takes place following the First World War. American society enjoyed prosperity during the "roaring" 1920s as the economy soared. At the same time,
Prohibition, the ban on the sale and manufacture of alcohol as mandated by the Eighteenth Amendment, made millionaires out of bootleggers. After its republishing in 1945 and 1953, it quickly found a wide readership and is today widely regarded as a paragon of the Great American Novel, and a literary classic. The Great Gatsby has become a standard text in high school and university courses on American literature in countries around the world and is ranked second in the list of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century compiled by Modern Library, an American publishing company.
This Side of Paradise is the debut novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Published in 1920, and taking its title from a line of the Rupert Brooke poem Tiare Tahiti, the book examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. Its protagonist, Amory Blaine, is an attractive Princeton University student who dabbles in literature. The novel explores the theme of love warped by greed and status-seeking.

He is best known for his novels depicting the flamboyance and excess of the Jazz Age, a term he popularized in his short story collection Tales of the Jazz Age. During his lifetime, he published four novels, four story collections, and 164 short stories. Although he achieved temporary popular success and fortune in the 1920s, Fitzgerald received critical acclaim only after his death and is now widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.
Born into a middle-class family in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald was raised primarily in New York state. He attended Princeton University where he befriended future literary critic Edmund Wilson. Owing to a failed romantic relationship with Chicago socialite Ginevra King, he dropped out in 1917 to join the United States Army during World War I. While stationed in Alabama, he met Zelda Sayre, a Southern debutante who belonged to Montgomery's exclusive country-club set. Although she initially rejected Fitzgerald's marriage proposal due to his lack of financial prospects, Zelda agreed to marry him after he published the commercially successful This Side of Paradise (1920). The novel became a cultural sensation and cemented his reputation as one of the eminent writers of the decade.
His second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922), propelled him further into the cultural elite. To maintain his affluent lifestyle, he wrote numerous stories for popular magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's Weekly, and Esquire. During this period, Fitzgerald frequented Europe, where he befriended modernist writers and artists of the "Lost Generation" expatriate community, including Ernest Hemingway. His third novel, The Great Gatsby (1925), received generally favorable reviews but was a commercial failure, selling fewer than 23,000 copies in its first year. Despite its lackluster debut, The Great Gatsby is now hailed by some literary critics as the "Great American Novel". Following the deterioration of his wife's mental health and her placement in a mental institute for schizophrenia, Fitzgerald completed his final novel, Tender Is the Night (1934).
Struggling financially because of the declining popularity of his works during the Great Depression, Fitzgerald moved to Hollywood, where he embarked upon an unsuccessful career as a screenwriter. While living in Hollywood, he cohabited with columnist Sheilah Graham, his final companion before his death. After a long struggle with alcoholism, he attained sobriety only to die of a heart attack in 1940, at 44. His friend Edmund Wilson edited and published an unfinished fifth novel, The Last Tycoon (1941), after Fitzgerald's death. In 1993, a new edition was published as The Love of the Last Tycoon, edited by Matthew J. Bruccoli.

Como no me gusta reseñar libros que recopilan varias novelas porque pueden ser de muy distinta calidad (como ha sido el caso), sirva solo para dejar aquí juntas las reseñas de El gran Gatsby y de A este lado del paraíso.
Le doy una nota de 3 porque El gran Gatsby me ha gustado bastante pero A este lado del paraíso la he abandonado.

Since I don't like to review books that compile several novels because they can vary greatly in quality (as was the case here), I'll just leave the reviews of The great Gatsby y de This side of paradise together here.
I'm giving it a 3 out of 5 because I quite liked The Great Gatsby, but I abandoned This Side of Paradise.

EL GRAN GATSBY
Supravalorada (en mi modesta opinión) novela corta del célebre F. Scott Fitzgerald que, aún así, se deja leer. Se relata una bonita historia de amor, o de desamor, o más bien un sueño improbable, aunque rodeada de lujo y frivolidad que la menoscaban y la vuelven casi inverosímil.
A ESTE LADO DEL PARAÍSO
Historia algo más extensa del mismo aclamado autor que, sin embargo, resulta tediosa y casi indescifrable. Cuenta la vida de un egoísta, según su propia definición, que presume de intelectual, si bien sólo parece un niño malcriado y un vago redomado. Según mi humilde criterio, es absolutamente prescindible, aunque más de uno se eche las manos a la cabeza.

Me gustó más el gran Gatsby que a este lado del paraíso, igualmente son dos muy buenas novelas

Dos notables novelas de uno de los autores más importantes del siglo XX, y que se encuentran juntas en este volumen, parte de una colección dedicada a lo mejor de la literatura de la anterior centuria. La primera cuenta la historia de un joven adinerado y caprichoso, y su paso hacia la madurez, mientras va descubriendo los aspectos más difíciles de la vida (su familia llega a perder su fortuna) y va convirtiéndose en un hombre completamente distinto. Ciertos episodios los harán echar coco sobre las relaciones humanas y el papel del individuo en la sociedad. La segunda, más famosa, aunque me impresionó menos, plantea el dilema del amor, el estatus y la redención. No querrán perdérselas.

Aunque no fue una lectura de mi agrado, es innegable que es muy interesante.
El gran Gastby, grande por sus riquezas y misterios. Es comprensible el porqué de perseguir tales sueños. ¿Pero para qué? Al final, es el cuestionamiento contra el que se enfrenta, aunque quizás él ya lo tenía claro. Sus principios, aunque cuestionables, son sus principios en totalidad y termina actuando según ellos, según su gran amor. Un gran amor que, sin embargo, no termina de salvarlo.
Hay muchos tintes a crítica social, así como una mirada a la soledad en las personas.
El gran Gastby, grande por sus riquezas y misterios. Es comprensible el porqué de perseguir tales sueños. ¿Pero para qué? Al final, es el cuestionamiento contra el que se enfrenta, aunque quizás él ya lo tenía claro. Sus principios, aunque cuestionables, son sus principios en totalidad y termina actuando según ellos, según su gran amor. Un gran amor que, sin embargo, no termina de salvarlo.
Hay muchos tintes a crítica social, así como una mirada a la soledad en las personas.
