Rate this book
Following the unique and successful formula combining architectural information and walking tours shown in his book on New York, noted McGraw-Hill author Gerard Wolfe offers travelers and armchair travelers the same enlightenment and pleasure for Chicago. The tours are organized around architecturally significant downtown areas in and around the famous Loop, a convenient starting point. An informative introduction puts building and neighborhood in context, describing the effects fo the Great Fire of 1871 and the Columbian Exhibition of 1893, among other events.

Chicago is known for architecture, but it goes far beyond the usual suspects of the Sears Tower and the John Hancock building. This book will lead you to some gems that the typical tourist won't see, such as the Marquette Building and the Rookery. I relied on this book to plan some lunchtime outings when I was working in the Loop.

A dozen architectural walking tours plus a guide to the pedway (c1996). Could use more and color pictures.
