The old couple who visits the small island every summer befriends a tiny fox cub. The lives of all of them change dramatically in the ensuing years when war comes to Japan.
I read this book just before watching the film. (It was just devastating!) The film gave me the impression of a not-so-subtle metaphor for the war. It lingers on the actions of the man and on the results of these actions, which are depicted explicitly. (and again devastating!) The book is kind of more romantic (still very sad!). It gave me the impression of just the depiction of a short span in the circle of life and nature which can be affected by the action of men but still goes on no matter what, even war.
