Victory in Normandy

Rate this book
The invasion of northern France in 1944 was the most significant victory of the Western Allies in the Second World War. American, British and Canadian forces established a foothold on the shores of Normandy, and, after a protracted and costly campaign to reinforce their gains, broke out into the French interior and began a headlong advance.

A well focussed detailed account of the planning for, carrying out of, struggles and problems with, and successfully carrying out of the immense Normandy invasion and liberation of France up to the "breakout" and progress north. Written by Montgomery's chief of staff 35 years after the events based on personal notes, it's definitely a calm, understated but interesting account which clears up some myths about the "timetable" of the invasion goals and targets in the D-Day + phases, and makes clear that in no way did overall planner Montgomery *ever* make a list of goals, phases or a timetable of objectives except for D-Day + 90 to be at the Seine post breakout. Definitely a bit biased towards enhancing Montys reputation and the contribution of British and Canadian forces, Belchem is honest enough to point out mistakes and immense bravery and successes of the US forces, Paratroopers, Rangers as well as those of the British and Canadians. His assessment of the decisions made, and progress made by the Allies and German efforts to repulse the invasion is precise and fair, while overall he clearly believes it went as "according to plan" as any such vast undertaking could, in view of the poor weather in the opening weeks. Great illustrations, maps and photos make it easy to follow for such a complex and intricate account. Definitely one for enthusiasts of this particular 8 week major campaign of WW2. Very interesting but textbook-like.

For students of the Normandy Campaign, little of any great interest to get there teeth into, except for an insider view on the "Phase line issue". Well enough written, but lacking in detail.
