He was dying...the doctors told him had had only a few months to live and there was nothing they could do. But death wasn't what scared T.J. Littejohn; he had a wife and three children, and nothing to leave them but a tiny slice of East Texas prairie and a handful of cows. He needed the money and he needed it fast. A wanted poster in the sheriff's office gave him the answer--he became a bounty hunter. Read by Gene Engene 6 CD's 6.6 Hrs.
T.J. Littlejohn has a wife and 3 children. A strong family unit that works hard together on their little farm, but T.J. and wife really have something special for each other… being totally in love just as they were as teenagers, and are raising their children with tenderness, love and respect to have for each other. But T.J. shows signs of illness, and after he visits the doctor in town, he receives news, not good news, he’s dying and doesn’t have a long time to live.
What does a man do in this position to secure the future for his wife and children? Something that’s very dangerous, not easy, but hopes it will provide.
An old fashioned hard gritty western, mixed with an undying love, and a unexpected gut-wrenching twist at the end.
I first heard about "Death Rides a Pale Horse" years ago when I drove an 18-wheeler over the road. Another driver was listening to it on tape and told me how great the book was, and what a terrific writer Dusty Rhodes was. This was a really nice book; very enjoyable. It has it's share of beautiful moments, action, drama, adventure, love, sadness, and retribution. Personally, I feel like it would transition into a film rather nicely, but then I like westerns. More over, my Wife & Mother-in-Law both took time about reading this with me. They both liked it as well. They tend to skew towards "Dr. Quinn" & "Little House on The Prairie", whereas I'm more of a "Hell on Wheels", "Django Unchained", "The Beguiled" type. We all liked it to, so there's that.
I'm not normally a fan of westerns, but picked this audio book for a fun escape. The story was not extremely memorable, but it was enjoyable and kept my interest, and deserves at least a good, solid 3.5 stars.
This was a dark and gritty western. Strong, determined cast of characters and some serious twists I didn’t anticipate. I’ve seen a lot of western movies, but this is only the second western book I’ve ever read (besides Lonesome Dove). Enjoyed!
