This is one of those books that I wish someone had handed me way earlier in life. It would've saved me so much of the time I spent thinking (incorrectly) that science was boring or too hard, or that various aspects of it really didn't interest me on the day to day (I'm looking at you Electromagnetic Spectrum). As it is, it took me until well into my college career to realize that my chosen field of study actually made ME a scientist and that science itself could be fun and energizing. THINK OF ALL THE TIME I COULD'VE SAVED, THE BOOKS I COULD'VE READ!
This book had me alternating between jotting down notes, cackling with laughter, and resembling Keanu Reeves in what is, arguably, one of his top two roles of all time:
(I'M NOT FORGETTING ABOUT 'POINT BREAK', GUYS. I SAID "TOP TWO")
This is a quick, fun read full of digestible wisdom- highly recommend!
Disclosure: I know the author of this book, but purchased my own copy on my own steam. This review contains my honest thoughts.
Everyday Amazing: Fascinating Facts about the Science That Surrounds Us was an entertaining and fun read, introducing readers to the amazing science around us. It is not an overly technical book (it's not a textbook), so would be easily understood by your everyday reader. It focuses on ten main topics: Atoms, Electromagnetic Waves, Earths Atmosphere (+Magnetic Field and Surface), Geology (+Earth History and Elements), Photosynthesis, Water, Cells, Neuroscience, Genetics/Evolution, Poop (Waste). This book is by no means all inclusive, but a very good introduction to these topics.
Don't let the author name Beatrice the Biologist fool you, she actually covers pretty much everything here! In nice easy to digest chapters, this book was so easy to understand. With humour and wonderful comic illustrations, it didn't feel dumbed down at all. I definitely recommend this as a starter and you can then go and research more on any topic you're interested in. I must admit I slightly lost interest when I got to the poop section but apart from that it was riveting! I'm now on a mission to get everyone reading this.
Extremely creative science basics book. The highlight are the cartoon-like graphics illustrating the various concepts. One of my ah-has was how plants use different light wavelengths. Green I thought I got. But there are red, purple and other leaves... Super cool.
