About the author

Mahfuz Ullah, a media celebrity, is a senior political commentator, a front-ranking environmentalist and an accomplished author of Bangladesh. Born on Friday, 10 March 1950 to a highly educated and politi-cally enlightened family of Noakhali, East Pakistan, Mahfuz Ullah grew up in parallel with the progress of the struggle for self-determination of the people of the eastern wing of Pakistan.

Mahfuz Ullah regularly participates in TV and radio talk shows on differ-ent socio-political and environmental issues. As an adjunct teacher he taught Journalism at Dhaka University and now teaches the same subject as Professor at Daffodil International University (DIU), Dhaka.

He also conducts training courses on politics, media, human rights, environment, climate change in other government and non-government institutions. As a trainer, he has conducted more than 200 training courses for media professionals, teachers of primary school, new entrants to judiciary, human rights activists, community leaders, environmental activists and political leaders and workers.

A widely travelled person, Mahfuz Ullah lives in Dhaka and is married with two daughters and one son, who are highly placed professionals abroad. His wife, Ms. Dinar Jadi Begum, is a retired government servant. His mother, Faizunnesa Begum, was a housewife and father, Habib Ullah, was a teacher-trainer and headed one of the Primary Training Insti-tute’s of the country. His elder brother, Professor Mahub Ullah is one of the leading economists of the country. One of his maternal grandfathers is Late Muzaffar Ahmed, one of the founders of the Communist Party of India (CPI).

সাপ্তাহিক বিচিত্রা'য় ১৯৭২ থেকে ১৯৮২ সাল পর্যন্ত প্রকাশিত মাহফুজ উল্লাহর লেখা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পাদকীয় ও উপসম্পাদকীয় নিয়ে এই বই। মূলত সদ্যস্বাধীন দেশে চোরাচালান, হত্যা, অরাজকতা, দুর্ভিক্ষের ভয়াবহতার পাশাপাশি তীব্র একপেশে ভারতবিদ্বেষ, জিয়া ও এরশাদের গুণকীর্তনে মুখর হয়েছেন মাহফুজ উল্লাহ।

পরনের কাপড়ের অভাবে গ্রামের মা-বোন মিছিল করে এসডিওর বাড়ি ( বর্তমান ইউএনও) ঘেরাও করছে, বাংলাদেশ থেকে পণ্য ভারতে পাচার হয়ে যাচ্ছে, চাকরির অভাবে যন্ত্রণায় মুক্তিযোদ্ধা আত্মহত্যা করছে কিংবা ক্ষুধার জ্বালায় সপরিবারে আত্মহত্যার মতো ঘটনা পাবেন বইতে। আইনশৃঙ্খলার চরম অবনতির চিত্রের পাশাপাশি জিয়া ও এরশাদকে মহামহিম হিসেবে উপস্থাপনের শতভাগ প্রচেষ্টাও আপনার দৃষ্টি এড়াবে না।


বইটি পক্ষপাতপুষ্ট অথচ সদ্যস্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের হাল-হকিকত জানার জন্য দরকারি।

আমি এই বইকে কোনো রেটিং করব না। সাংবাদিক মাহফুজ উল্লাহ 'বিচিত্রা' ম্যাগাজিনের তার কিছু লেখা এখানে সংকলিত করেছেন। লেখক একজন সাংবাদিক হ'লেও তার মধ্যে পক্ষপাতের ছাপ স্পষ্ট। অবশ্য এটা নতুন কিছু নয়, তার জীবনের দ্বিতীয় অর্ধে বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দলের দালালি তার মৃত্যুর পূর্ব পর্যন্ত ফকফকা ছিল। সমাজতন্ত্র, বিশেষত মাওয়ের, তথা ভাসানীর অনুসারী মাহফুজ উল্লাহ খুব সময় বুঝেই জিয়ার দালালিতে লেগেছিলেন। আওয়ামী লীগের প্রথম আমল (১৯৭২-১৯৭৫) তিনি ভালোভাবেই উপস্থাপন করেছেন, তার সব খারাপ দিকগুলো। মুজিব হত্যায় তিনি যী খুশি এবং এ হত্য্যাকান্ডকে যথাযথ মনে করেছেন তাও বোঝা যায়।
