Undone: Breaking My Body To Save My Soul

Rate this book
Quiet, shy sixteen-year-old Megan is suddenly blindsided with a massive brain bleed from a dangerous tumor-like mass she didn’t even know she had. She is scared and confused and her faith in God is put to the test. She’d known about God and His goodness, but after experiencing such a blow to the head she learns to know God and lean on Him as she grieves loss and tries to navigate through high school, college and the years beyond in a broken condition.

This brutally honest account of Megan’s eighteen-year struggle with a rare but life threatening and debilitating genetic condition known as cavernous hemangioma expresses her deepening and lasting faith in Jesus Christ even as her physical body often fails her. This narrative of seemingly senseless and endless physical suffering and struggle in fact turns out to be the schoolmaster for the saving of her soul.

Knowing Meg is a blessing and not in disguise. Call me an optimist by "picking sides" but this an amazing book just by seeing how hard that she was working on it (I know that most people that don't know Meg and reading the book is a whole new perspective of someone else's shoes in their trauma and pain growing up in the teen years and experiencing new things a things that most people don't go through). Meg started writing her book to explain some things for her 2 absolutely AMAZING children that I am extremely close to in age and more in friendship, but in mid-writing she decided to share it with the world once she was done which I saw mentally and psychically drain her everyday towards the end. I cannot use the right amount of words to explain how appreciated I am towards her and her family, reading this book (considering how I am close to the family to be a part of it as her 'child') in the eyes of her child this means a lot, the descriptive words and explanation of some many big details in her life in all of the questions that I have, knowing more things about her that I didn't know, expanding my knowledge and others. I am ever so thankful and grateful for the love that she has given to me and the help of raising me. When I bought her book she left me a note: "I hope you like reading about my journey of faith."

I learned about cavernous malformations (brain bleeds, hemangiomas) in this accounting of one woman's journey through life, medicine, and faith in this book. I found the medical information interesting.

On the flipside, I felt the book suffered from a lack of focus. Even with the medical story, it seemed to jump often from how terrible she felt, how her body wouldn't do anything correctly, how heartless the healthcare workers were to walking three blocks to eat supper one or two days later (you know, many restaurants will deliver, even to motels; especially in Phoenix), singing for staff (after saying speech wasn't working right), and how kind and caring staff were to her.

I learned entirely too much about how her husband treated her (good, bad, good, bad... repeat). And, though she called this work her "testimony" the faith part seems rambling. I applaud her strong faith and, even, some of the scriptures, but it just felt disjointed and I couldn't always follow her train of thought. Sometimes I felt she was sounding young and whiny... but then would feel guilty about judging her level of pain.

It does take guts to bare your soul about all of these things, so I do applaud her sharing to those that might need to hear this story.

Deeply moving, personal tale of survival and healing

Blown away by Megan’s story of God’s healing and trustworthiness. “Not one word of God’s good promises has ever failed.” This story is detailed down to the minutia of her high school years, but it’s all pertinent to the theme of God’s chasing after her. Fully relatable, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll pray along with and for Megan as she continues her journey and walk!
