Brandon Hale

10 books14 followers
When Brandon Hale was a young boy, he lived in South America. It was a great place to be a kid, and his mom let him play outside as much as he wanted. He had a dog named Okie, a slingshot, and an awesome tree house his dad built. The tree was full of pink mangoes, jabbering parrots, and fat iguanas! When he was older, his family moved home to Oklahoma, and he began second grade. His favorite classes were Reading and History. He still got to spend a lot of time outdoors, and sometimes his uncles would take him hunting—with their falcons! His favorite tales were Treasure Island, The Swiss Family Robinson, Old Yeller, and The Hobbit.

After finishing 19 years(!) of school, Brandon went to work as a lawyer. In 2001, a very beautiful lady agreed to marry Brandon. Now they have five great kids and live on the Oklahoma plains. Regarding Prince Martin, Brandon didn’t even know he existed until he popped into his head one day! And when he had to go overseas for a long time in 2015, Brandon would tell his young son Prince Martin stories on the phone. In fact, the boy named some of the most important characters! Now Brandon wakes up real early every morning (when the house is unusually quiet) and writes about Prince Martin.

Best Book Ever

My seven-year-old daughter gives this book five stars! We kept hearing about Prince Martin, but we hadn't been able to get our hands on Prince Martin books at the library yet, so we were psyched when we were given an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

NOTE: Even though we started at book four in the series, we didn't feel totally confused.

The morals are refreshing. Modern books seem to have so many disrespectful characters for young readers. This story focuses on characters with true grit, and it shows children how not to judge others so quickly. Princess Meg may be a small girl, but she can take care of herself! Characters with physical disabilities are shown as helpful and tough. The main crew of characters even shows mercy to villains.

The words have a definite rhythm that makes this great as a read-aloud. Even though my child is at a fourth or fifth grade reading level, there is a lot of rich vocabulary since she's only seven. Fortunately, there is a glossary of "power words" at the book's end, and most words are used multiple times throughout the story to enforce their value and increase your child's exposure to them. So, this is a fine book for many ages, just be aware you may need to explain some of the vocabulary to your child as you go.

Our only complaint is that we wish there were more illustrations. They go along perfectly with the text, and they are sharp, bold -- absolutely attention-getting! They are a bit cartoonish and a bit sophisticated all at once, making them enjoyable for all ages.

The brown bear cub, Torben, is happy to share berries with other critters. Alas Torben is blind so can't outrun the threat and terror of Felman the Slaver!

Margaret aka Meg, 9, is a princess who has come to stay with her favorite cousin, Prince Martin, 10. The circus has come to town. The two youngsters overhear a dirty deal going on between the Ringmaster and someone else. Can Sir Ray help? What about John, a timber wolf, or Ted, an elf? When she is told she must stay home will Princess Meg obey? Having helped Torben home is the adventure over?

This, the fourth book in the series, is the longest of them all. Danger and suspense abounds. Whilst it is a stand alone story you'll really want to start at the beginning, if you have not already done so. FANTASTIC series! Written in rhyme but not set out like poetry. GREAT ending. I, as an adult, have read this entire fantasy series and you can pass them onto your kids with no fear of them reading something they shouldn't. Chivalry is alive and kicking! Thanks, Liz

These books keep getting longer and longer. Not sure I like that, but this story did jump around a lot so it probably took longer to tell it. But the ending was too good not to give it a 5 star. The one line about valuing people and not judging them by their perceived weakness hit me hard. This book had two plot lines really that merged well, it was about rescuing a cub, then rescuing a princess. It dealt with pouching, animal cruelty, how people can be an asset even if they have a disability or "weakness", and it also dealth with facing ones fears. So much compacted in one fantasy story that even children should be able to understand and I love that about it! Don't see how the 5th book can top this after the lessons learned here and all the action! Bears, wild cats, viking-like villains! Oh, and I loved seeing the King's humor and encouragement, so sweet and funny haha

4th in a series of books about Prince Martin, set in a fantasy kingdom with elves and some talking animals; the series is designed to teach kids some values of kindness, friendship, courage, etc. It is in a sing-song rhyme reminiscent of Dr. Seuss that I find a bit annoying, but whatever. This one features Prince Martin and his cousin Princess Meg facing off against some evil Northmen who are slavers to rescue a blind talking cave bear cub and get him back to his clan in the North. My kids loved it.
