I always enjoy a new voice in storytelling, in narration and writing. This story is full of new and diverse characters with a new kind of tale where magic meets science. This meeting sure isn’t pretty. It follows Kwen, a college student, who is thrust into a whirlwind of an adventure after strange light starts appearing in spots in Atlanta. Strange things start happening in the city after the light appears and before you know it Kwen has to go through a crash course on how to save the world. There’s also a love interest 😁! I enjoyed what the author did at the end by including “Unsung.” In Unsung he tells parts of the story through other characters’ perspectives, characters that made an appearance in the main story and characters that are important to the main story. I can’t wait to read/listen to the next novel in the series, because there has to be a sequel! I need to know what happens to the world and the interesting characters that we were introduced to. I would consider this a #YA novel and I recommend it to those who would like to know what one possibility of an encounter with the old world of magic and the new world of science would look like, those who enjoy to read about mythical creatures, and those who enjoy a fresh new voice in writing and narration. Excellent!!!

An actual descent and great read for a fantasy book for the modern era. Spoilers alert: I like the fact that it combines magic and current technology and throws in a bit of historical reasoning that explains how one era becomes another one. A definite readers list option for everyone

This YA urban fantasy sees college student Kwen Phifer thrown into a battle between our world and the hidden world of magic. Science has been allowed to rule but as that’s basically failed, Kwen has been chosen to defend the world he loves. It’s a wild ride filled with the grittiness of the real world and creatures and elements of fantasy. I enjoyed the unique mixture of a modern day story mixed with classical fantasy elements like spells and creatures.

I recommend this book for anyone looking for a fun, enjoyable, unique take on urban fantasy. Mild language, so I'd say readers as young as 12/13 can enjoy.

While this book wasn't my style nor did I really enjoy it, objectively this is a great book for younger readers to dip their toes into urban fantasy. The writing is easy to read and propels the story foward. Kwen is an easy character to connect with and love his voice. Definitely not a book for me, but it'd be amazing for my teenage son and others his age.

Intricate and masterful world building underneath the streets of Atlanta and beyond. What a great adventure with much more to be told!
