This was a short excellent book on the production of felt hats as practiced in the 1700s and later, starting with the making of the felt and going all the way to the finished product. It is very well illustrated with historical engravings and photos of museum artifacts. The book goes into a lot of detail and is very technical. I'm not sure I was quite able to fully understand everything between the text and the pictures, but I did get a pretty good idea of how the craft was practiced. I think this book will be useful for doing an 1860s hatter impression at Civil War reenactments by helping me to understand what techniques and technology was used that is different from the modern craft.
