The book addresses the problems of map generalization and draws upon the research of the National Center for Geographic Information, State University New York, who set up an initiative to formulate rules to improve efficiency, preserve consistency and incorporate sound principles into digital mapping. Divided into four sections the book looks at rule base organization, data modelling issues, formation of rules and computational and representational issues. The book identifies and prioritizes the problems involved in the development of a rule base and provides a framework to help solve these problems.
