AN AUSTRALIAN SOCIOLOGIST SURVEYS NDE "EXPERIENCERS"

Cherie Sutherland is a visiting fellow at the School of Sociology at the University of New South Wales in Australia. She notes in the Preface of this 1992 book that during her son's birth, "I experienced the essence of who I am: selfless, egoless, bodyless, free of time and space. This experience... was to provide me with a view of reality and a consciousness of self that I had not even imagined to be a possibility, and was profoundly to alter my life... In this present study I have found that people are greatly changed by such experiences ... given new direction, purpose and energy. I certainly was... The experience I have so briefly outlined thus was to provide the starting point for my doctoral thesis and this book..." (Pg. xiv-xvi)

She adds, "My starting point is that the near-death experience exists, that it is real in the minds of those who have had it and, in particular, that it is real in its consequences. This book examines these consequences." (Pg. 13)

She writes, "In addition to a change in values there has also been shown to be a definite change in beliefs among those who've had an NDE... in my own sample I reported that belief in reincarnation was also found to be noticeably strengthened." (Pg. 41) She adds that researchers "all concluded that experiencers became more religious after their NDEs." (Pg. 43)

She observes, "One recurring theme in near-death accounts is the difficulty near-death experiencers have in talking about the experience afterward. They quickly discover that prevalent social and medical attitudes make general acceptance of such phenomena extremely problematic." (Pg. 71)

She states, "it appears that there is a definite increase in the presence of a wide range of psychic phenomena in people after a near-death experience." (Pg. 134) She also notes, "Thirty-six out of thirty-nine respondents reported an increased interest in spiritual matters since their NDE." (Pg. 163)

Not the broadest survey of NDE experiencers, its uncommon country of origin (Australia) nevertheless makes this an interesting book for anyone studying NDEs.

Reborn Light is a powerful, emotionally resonant story that blends hope, transformation, and the strength of the human spirit. From the very first chapter, I was drawn into the main character's journey and the vivid world Dana Evyn has created.

If you want to read a well written professional review of NDEs, this book is for you. It was originally written as a dissertation and as such, is full of facts, scientific methodology, analysis and case studies. In other words, it was not written for sensationalism or emotional impact. Bantam capitalized on the success of Bettie Eadie’s book when they came out with this one so it also sold well. I remember I enjoyed it better than Betty’s book it because of the scientific / academic approach. But the book is not for everybody. It’s long, detailed, drawn-out in places and contains stuff that you may not be looking for if you just want to get to the meat of NDE stories. There are thousands of such stories out there, perhaps millions. It seems every book has unique stories to tell. This one is no different but the commentary in dissecting the stories makes this one more worthwhile to me. If you want to know how experiencing an NDE changed fifty Australians into more loving, caring, sensitive, happy and fulfilled people, then this book will be helpful to you. It was to me.
