The Real News By John Bernard Ruane 2019 Reviewed by Angie Mangino Rating: 4 stars
Written as a satire, The Real News attempts to tell “The Never-Before-Told Stories of Donald Trump and Fake News!”
With a merging of public figures and fictional characters, most of the fifteen chapters revolve around President Trump and the media. Oprah Winfrey, Davide Letterman, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Matt Lauer, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and others additionally find their way into the author’s sight.
With the constant barrage of “Fake News” accusations, especially on Twitter from President Trump, journalism and the media are in the forefront. The line between sensationalism and traditional journalism blurs more and more in our society today.
Readers will appreciate the satire better after a quote in the book describing the journalism standard held for generations. As a journalist, this reviewer can attest to the standard from personal experience and training, reading this quote, and remembering the newsroom editor speaking them almost verbatim.
“Get all the facts, get two solid sources, and don’t be influenced by anyone trying to sway the story in the direction of their own opinion or agenda. And that includes your associates in the newsroom!”
Readers will find sections that make them laugh or be angry, depending on their opinion of the persons involved. Most importantly, however, is that this satire will make them think about the direction reporting and politics are going today, and the integrity and standards that are being lost in the process.

I felt that the title, "The Real News," is appropriate for this book, because there are stories about what is happening now in today's society with our president, Donald Trump, the members of Congress, and the news media.
John Ruane has captured the personalities of each character in a way that brings them to life in your imagination through your exposure to the news and what you remember hearing or thinking each time their name was spoken.
My favorite story was actually the very first one. It's about a little nine-year old boy wearing a cowboy suit, licking a lollipop, and how he gave six Democratic leaders a brilliant idea on how to gain the support of the president regarding gun control legislation.
You will find humor in stories like Obama leaping off the Brooklyn Bridge and the mystery in the Untold Story of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. All of your favorite and most hated celebrities, news media reporters, congressmen and women, candidates and nominees, (past and present,) who ran for the presidency, are positioned throughout the entire book.
By the time you have finished reading, it will be hard to remember what is real or fake news.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has shown an interest in politics, listened to the news, and who needs a good laugh.
A satirical look at what's real and what ... isn't
Ruane writes "The Real News!" and it is not what is expected from the title. This book is a political satire and just a look at the listings on its chapters, shows where this book will go. Ruane writes about what did happen and then his perception on the headlines since Trump announced his Presidency and what followed after he won the Election. This book showed that the writer knew what he was talking about and he had great insight into the headlines. It's an entertaining and interesting story, and even if you don't agree with the politics, the writing reminds the reader of a wild and captivating ride, no matter what side the reader is on.
Literature of the Absurd: We Need this Right Now As we continue to gyrate in reaction to the impossible-to-imagine moves of our current president, sometimes we need humor to remind us that “yes,” this really is absurd and that realization can help us retain sanity when it seems the center not only can’t hold, but can’t even get a preliminary grip. John Ruane’s very funny “reporting” in “The Real News” takes actual events to “logically” absurd conclusions, totally redefining the terms” real vs fake” news to give readers a much-needed belly laugh—even when you want to cry over the daily news. It’s cathartic, it’s clever, it’s what we need right now. Pick it up and pass it on. We deserve this levity.
First, thanks to John Bernard Ruane and Post-Hills Press for sending me this good reads give away. I enjoyed reading this satire version of the goings on in our country. What a way to compromise the arguments and out right hate in the nation. A little laugh at some of the absurd day today conflicts is well worth the read.
I won this book in the first reads giveaway! Bernard Ruane tackles controversial topics and ideas but backs up his opinions with legitimate sources and ideas. Overall, a great read.
I enjoyed this interesting and entertaining read that helps to retain some grounding in this time of what is true and what is not in our country and world. Thanks to John Raune.
I'm not one for satire, at least not in the written sense, especially in the political sense either, but I found this book to be quite entertaining. I found most all of Trump's favorite celebrities and political counterparts roasted here in these pages, all without a bias. Just genuine fun! If you're not looking for something that's going to weigh you down politically then I would recommend 'The Real News". With the circus of politics bombarding us everyday from every conceivable venue, its refreshing to take a step back and put it all into the context of satire. After all, who can believe anything anyone says anymore?
