Echoes of Topsail: Stories of the Island's Past

Rate this book
Echoes of Topsail is a story about Topsail Island, NC, its facts, folklore and heartbeat, voiced by its people who gave it life over the years. Those who live here speak with reverent whisper about the magic that caught them and will not let them leave. This magic is the heartbeat of Topsail - slow and steady - that never misses a beat despite hammering by the wind, nudging by ocean surf, and ravaging by man. We come to the island and fall into the slow, throbbing beat, becoming it, even on a short stay. Like the loggerhead, we keep coming back. Topsail Island is a metaphor for life. It is ever changing and yet, stays the same. If we pay attention, we can learn from Topsail how to enjoy life's journey.

I chose this book after falling in love with Topsail Island on our honeymoon. The book has some interesting facts, but is very poorly written. The author has good intentions, but falls short. Many subjects often only have a few short sentences about them and then are never touched upon again and quite often dates are missing. On several occasions the author makes a reference to the date as XX years ago. I could go on and on, but I'll summarize: good intentions, but poorly written.
