I watched the young horses frolic in our front yard. They reared up, spun in a circle and raced to the end of the fence. Their spontaneous joy and delight in the life they lived.
They danced with the wings of the wind, their delight in the life they lived radiated from them in the joyful playfulness of their movements.
They were at liberty, unfettered and free.
“Oh, Father, they are so beautiful,” I breathed.
With tender love, so gentle in its touch, God’s Spirit whispered to mine, “That is who you are to me. You are beautiful. Just as you are right now.”
I kind of snorted with skepticism, as “Right now? How can that be? I am not doing anything.”
“Exactly.”
As I watched the frolicking foals continue their lively games, I pondered these thoughts. I love horses. Period. Not because of what they can do for me, but simply because they are who they are.
That day, God made a bridge and gave me a nudge to help me understand, that just as I love horses and delight in watching them and take great pleasure in being with them because of who they are, he loves me. Delights in me. Finds pleasure in being with me…
Simply because I am me…who he made me to be. Beautiful.
I asked God to help me live in the freedom of this truth, for I confess I have spent much of my life fettered to the expectations – real and imagined – of what I thought God, the church, and the people in my life expected me to be and to do for them. I was weary of carrying that burden. I longed to live life with the same liberty as the foals…to be unfettered from the bonds of expectations…to be able to live life…
On freedom’s wings.
"On Freedom's Wings" is a compilation of some of the stories of how God has used horses to speak to my heart and teach me about faith, hope, and love.
