The title says it all and much needed in today’s world, especially the chapter on authenticity
Dr. Merritt was right: it was a rough ride at times, challenging me to deep and difficult self-reflection. Abandoning character is far more costly and painful and,in the end, empties life of its greatest impact.
I received an advanced copy of the digital version and it more than met my expectations. It’s biblically based and thought-provoking.

This is a read that will make you evaluate the image you present to a world seeking consistent, character driven people. Merritt lists different values in each chapter, bringing a focus to each attribute.

This is not a quick read, as you will want to take notes throughout or research the real life examples Merritt shares. This would be a great book to do as a small group study or as a gift for leadership.
I would love to see the principles expanded on in this book adjusted to fit a youth study--these values are ones that do not go out of style and are ones that should be communicated to our young people.

I was an early reader, thanks to Harvest House publishers. I was not required to leave a review and all opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is an easy book to read and understand. Dr. Merritt uses everyday examples and incorporates bible verses to bring home the point. It makes one look inward and examine ones own character. I would highly recommend Character Still Counts to everyone.

I love this book. It's timely given how now more people care about the end result but never the means- and we are constantly comparing ourselves to versions of others online.
The author draws from experiences of various leaders and the Bible to highlight why Character still counts and it's an inspirational read.
What I do know is that if you are reading this book; you'll need a pen and notebook to jot down insights that leap off the page.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.

I just finished reading an advanced copy of Character Still Counts and it has reminded me how important it is to teach my students how important character is to living the best life you can live. Character is one of those qualities that has always been important, from the days of the Bible to today when popular people don’t show a whole lot of character. I tell my own children how much character counts and all three have planned to read this book as well. I read excerpts to them as I’m reading and we’ve been having a lot of conversations we might not have had otherwise. The verse that stands out to me the most and I was so happy to see included is the verse in the Book of Matthew about being a good and faithful servant. You’ll enjoy this book and it’ll remind you that character still counts.

I got the opportunity to read this book as part of the launch team from the publisher. In a time where there are so many false personas out there. I found this book extremely timely. I have been trying to be present and present myself as a true person, business owner and friend. This book is definitely a recommended read!

Excellent book for everyone to read.
Character is someting that is lacking these days. The phrase "Your word is your bond" is no longer true in today's society.
This is a good lesson brought to you in a fun to read format.
Don't forget to take notes. Pass the message on to your children, family and friends.

Character Still Counts is a great reminder of what’s really important. The author breaks down each chapter into a characteristic some of these include Integrity, Honesty, Humility, Loyalty, and Respect. I really enjoyed how the book relates back to the Bible for each trait. I also like how the author had examples of each trait and how some of the chapters were mini history lessons. I like to have examples to relate back to. I would definitely recommend this to others. I will be adding this to my collection of books to recommend.

This book is a beautiful blend of Biblical and historical examples of character traits that we should strive to achieve on a daily basis. While a strong character may not be something that is easy to come by in this day and age, this book demonstrates it’s importance. You’ll want to highlight this one!

I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this text, but all opinions are my own.

A huge step outside my comfort zone though I love the break down of character and how each part is important. Some of the Bible references I wasn't familiar with though supported the points extremely well. If your looking for a great read with a biblical background I highly recommend. I am so thankful to have received an advanced digital copy of this book.

Some might think character no longer matters to evangelical Christians. And Merritt provides some evidence that indicates it might very well be the case. He notes that for the 1992 presidential election of Bush/Clinton, Republicans were concerned about Clinton's morality. Christians criticized the candidate for being a draft dodger and his lack of marital fidelity yet in 2016 overwhelmingly voted for just such a man. In 2011, only 30 percent of evangelicals believed an immoral man could be an effective and good leader. In 2016, that number had jumped to 72 percent. (Loc 144/3042) It would seem evangelicals no longer value upstanding character.

Losing the value of character comes at a high price, Merritt says. Are we personally maintaining a high standard of character? Are we training our children in godly character traits? He reminds us character does not develop by accident. He has written this book to remind us of godly character traits and encourage us to develop them. He writes about integrity, honesty, humility, loyalty, honor, respect, authenticity, generosity, courage, perseverance, self control, forgiveness, and faithfulness.

I like how Merritt has structured his writing. He tells stories as illustrations, including some of his own, ones from the Bible and the example of Jesus. He even includes some funny stories. He has thoughtful commentary on each of the character traits and provides some practical suggestions for developing them.

I recommend this book to evangelical Christians. It is a penetrating reminder that character matters and ignoring godly character has serious consequences.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

If I were to ever teach a series of lessons on character, this book would be at the top of the list for reference. To be honest, it would make for a tremendous teaching series on the subject of character. As we move on into the 21st century, character continues to show itself less and less through the lives of the people around us. Why is that? Why is character scarce? Why is it when you come in contact with someone that has character they immediately stand out?

The illustrations alone in this book are worth it for the read. As a pastor, good illustrations are often hard to come by. Merritt, from his many years of pastoral experience, illustrate each of the characteristics with a myriad of well-placed illustrations.

Most imporantly, every characteristic highlighted by the author is then illustrated by a character in the Bible who exemplified that characteristic. I cannot recommend this book enough!

The 12 Chapters on Character are as follows:

1. Integrity: Living Under the Microscope
2. Honesty: Nothing But the Truth
3. Humility: It's Not About Me
4. Loyalty: I'll Be There
5. Respect: Honor Above All
6. Authenticity: The Real Deal
7. Generosity: Give It All You've Got
8. Courage: Go Big, Go Bold
9. Perseverance: Run the Stop Sign
10. Self-Control: Caging the Lion
11. Forgiveness: When the Doctor Heals Himself
12. Faithfulness: You Can Count on Me

Dr. James Merritt writes about values that endure across time and space, not only as Christians, but as ethical human beings living in the world. Each chapter focuses on a different character trait including: integrity, honesty, humility, loyalty, respect, authenticity, generosity, courage, perseverance, self-control, forgiveness, and faithfulness. He gives biblical, historical, and current examples.

Recommended for public libraries, church libraries, and small group discussions.

I received a free electronic galley from the publisher through NetGalley. My opinions are my own.

Even if you think your character is spotless, after reading this, you will probably see some need for improvement. Thank you, Dr. James Merritt for your clear words to help us all!

I knew I was going to like this book by the title. :) what I didn’t expect was the sense of pride and almost patriotism? that I felt while reading.

We all have choices in life - choices where our inner character is made known (either publicly or private only to ourselves).

I was encouraged that, indeed, character still does count and that there is a movement of people who agree.

The publishing of this book, Character Still Counts, is timely. It is a reminder of of what really counts - character. Each chapter identified a character trait. Dr. Merritt uses examples and bible verses to support his points. This book has caused me to self-reflect. I was afforded the opportunity to review an advance copy from the publisher. Character seems to be something we see less and less in people in the world today. James Merritt writes about 12 important character traits with examples from men and women in the Bible, and people throughout history that truly lived those traits.
Reading this book has been convicting and a refreshing. We need to bring back character traits into our everyday life and this book is a great resource to remember the importance of character.

I graciously received an advance PDF for review. All the opinions are my own.

Just finished reading Character Still Counts and absolutely loved it. The book is so relevant today in this "do what feels good" society. It is written in the same manner as Dr. Merritt preaches, so easy to understand and every principal backed up with scripture. I recommend it to new Christians especially because Dr. Merritt explains all the character traits that we need to develop as a Child of God.

Dr. Merritt has really brought all of the parts of character together so well in Character Still Counts. I especially like his thought bubbles restating key points. This one is special to me:
When you stand beneath the cross of Christ and gaze up at God, it's impossible to look down on anyone else.

Nuanced Fire. This book is typical of Merritt the Elder's style of truly nuanced fire - he will not back down on what he believes, but he absolutely understands nuance where applicable. In this discussion of character, he does not negate his own integrity by taking partisan sides, yet speaks to character as the Bible describes it. And when that means mentioning a certain 1990s era US President's affairs, Merritt the Elder in the very same breath also mentions the sitting US President's affairs. Full of jokes and various stories - as well as Scripture references - this is as easy to read as listening to one of his sermons either live or (as I often did growing up) on TV. While I don't agree politically or theologically with absolutely everything here, really the main reason for the 4* rating is the constant use of prooftexting - citing Bible verses out of context. Were it not for my personal crusade against the practice, this would easily be a 5* read. Very much recommended, whether or not you normally agree with Merritt the Elder's own conservative evangelical American Christian mindset.

*A note on "Merritt the Elder": One of Dr. Merritt's sons, Jonathan, is also a Christian Living writer now and has written nearly a handful of books over the last decade or so - and serves as his father's agent and editor on this project. I grew up outside Atlanta listening to Dr. Merritt's sermons on TV as we got ready for church, and began reading Jonathan's books with his 2012 release A Faith Of Our Own. To separate the two and as an homage to the Pliny's, I use "the Elder" or "the Younger" and have since I first read Jonathan's works.

This book is a win for the climate that we are living in right now. One of my favorite Chapters in the Introduction of the book ‘Character Counts Don’t Leave Home Without it.’ The author states that “ Voting Republican or Democrat doesn’t make you a person of more or less character.” I should point out that the book is not political but he does make this point because many of saying the other lacks character based on politics. The Author reminds us in this chapter as well that “Low character comes with a high price”. This book is easy to read and you must take time to digest it. Each chapter gives us a glimpse of what character looks like with chapters such as integrity , honesty and self control. The book consists of 13 chapters. This is a book that everyone needs to read it’s biblical and honest.

My first book by James Merritt. This isn't a get through it quick book. It offers deep insight and delves into the thick of it right from the start. This title caught me immediately and I was appreciative to receive a ecopy from the publisher these are my own opinion and thoughts on what I read. I enjoy James' style of writing and respect the way he lays it out for the reader. I will definitely be able to bring this to my every day life as a coach and teacher. The end isn't always the most important part; I'm trying to teach my players and my own kids that sometimes the journey and how you direct yourself is more important. Can't wait to continue to put this to use.

In a world where character often seems to be lacking, I really appreciated this book. This book was affirming and challenging at the same time. I believe that the author speaks with truth and he relays all of these character traits back to Jesus. It was nice to read Biblical examples as well as modern examples. I have already recommended this book to a few of my friends.
