It's been over a year since I read the first book in the series, but you really don't need to refresh it in order to jump in. However, this book is also very slow to start. I really need a family tree or character list in the back in order to keep everyone straight; there are just so many characters! While not religious, the Muslim characters are shown positively. There isn't really much to learn or discuss, but the plot twists and turns make this a great mystery, so I will recommend this clean book for our school library.
