A very eye opening historic book written in an easy to read narrative. I picked this book to get to know our historic heroines. Ruth Mckenzie published this book in 1971 and gives detail information about Laura Secord in a well researched and historic context.

First of all: what a woman! To do what she did and then to be fighting for recognition all her life is one thing and to keep writing to government authorities and newspapers and then to the young prince Albert is another.
I decided that I am not a fan of colonel Fitz-Gibbon! In the early days after the battle he took all the credit for himself and got promotion after promotion. Yet in later years, he confesses that Laura Secord’s heads up helped greatly in winning the battle. And he also takes credit for the great help he received from his indigenous recruits. They fought the battle and Fitz-Gibbon army hardly did anything, yet he never mentions nor credits them.
The only thing that tainted my view, was when Mrs. Secord writes about her encounter at the indigenous camp before she reaches Fitz-Gibbon. She talks lowly of them and as if they were dangerous yet intimidated by her. She doesn’t even give a chance that maybe they realized the urgent situation and that was the reason they helped her not that they were scared and intimated by her!

A rather detailed account of the heroine of the War of 1812, and the difficulties she continued to encounter long after the war was over.

Short but interesting book on Laura Secord. Details her heroic act and how she came to be famous despite receiving little recognition during her lifetime.
