Leadership: The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best

This book vividly brings to life 50 years of leadership and life lessons, told in a compelling and sometimes very personal way. A master storyteller, the author does this in 24 easily digestible chapters, starting with "character," the basic building block for all great leaders. From there, he addresses the importance of trust, four different methods of mentoring, delivering under pressure, setting organizational expectations, breaking down cultural barriers, effective communications, leaving a legacy, risk management, and many more topics that have everyday application for all of us.

Widely acclaimed by dozens of corporate leaders and senior military leaders, he has the unique ability to connect to readers through storytelling and takeaways that anyone can then apply: in the corporate world, the non-profit community, or simply in your everyday life. Two bonus appendixes are included that are tools he personally used as a senior leader in the military: his "Philosophy of Command" -- time tested over 30 years -- and a self-reflection on himself as a leader titled "Whelden on Whelden."

Most leaders spend a lifetime trying to earn the trust and respect of others. Craig Whelden began that journey long before most people even discover what leadership truly means.

At just 14 years old, he became an Eagle Scout, a milestone that reflected discipline, integrity, and a commitment to serving others. Those same qualities would shape an extraordinary career, leading him to become the youngest General in the U.S. Army just three decades later.

But Craig's greatest achievement wasn't earning titles or rank. It was discovering how to inspire ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. Throughout his career, he learned that true leadership isn't about authority. It's about influence, purpose, and bringing out the very best in others.

Today, Craig Whelden is a three time award winning, number one international bestselling author and a sought after Fortune 500 keynote speaker. His insights have inspired leaders across industries, helping them transform teams, organizations, and lives.

In *Leadership: The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best*, Craig shares timeless leadership principles shaped by decades of real world experience. Whether you're leading a business, a team, your family, or simply striving to become the best version of yourself, this book offers practical wisdom that will transform the way you think about influence, success, and human potential.

Every page reflects lessons earned through experience, tested under pressure, and proven in the moments that matter most. This isn't just another leadership book. It's an invitation to unlock your potential, inspire those around you, and become the kind of leader people willingly choose to follow.

If you've ever wondered what separates truly exceptional leaders from everyone else, Craig Whelden's story and the insights within these pages may be exactly what you've been searching for.

Major General (retired) Craig Whelden has put 50 years of leadership experience into a fabulous book that can read through very quickly! The leadership tips he shares are all backed up with true stories of how he came upon, used and benefited from the tips he shares.

I had the privilege of interviewing him on my podcast and he "hit the ball out of the park!" As we discussed his book, he would go into detail on some of the topics he wrote about. The stories are fantastic!

I highly recommend this book for those that are in leadership positions or desiring to move into leadership positions!

Readable book on leadership

Very readable with manageably sized chapters. Nothing earth shattering in terms of leadership lessons offered by a military general officer.

Leadership: The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best by retired U.S. Army Major General Craig B. Whelden should be on every school’s mandatory reading list. According to a recent survey/study, there are over 15,000 books on leadership in print today and I have read quite a few of them. Reading many of them, although they offered excellent advice, were boring reads. Reading them was slow going, like wading through a muddy quagmire. Others were easy to read but offered nothing that would make the reader a better leader. Whelden’s Leadership: The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best was one of the exceptional ones that was both an easy, enjoyable to read, while teaching the reader what he/she needs to know in order to become an exceptional leader.

Whelden not only talks the talk, but he has walked the walk and, as  someone so wisely said, the walk talks louder than the talk. Although written based on his long, 30 year military career, the principles he teaches equally apply to the business world and to life. I don’t think that anyone can read this book with an open mind without coming away with a new perspective on what it means to be an effective and successful leader.
