This publication was first submitted as a Masters thesis in 1995; and published in 2003 by the International Research Institute for Māori and Indigenous Education as part of the Mana Wahine Monograph Series. This revised edition includes a new preface and is complemented by the artwork of Robyn Kahukiwa.
Originally written for Mikaere’s Masters thesis, this book is an intense, clear eyed and quite devastating look at the way that Māori women’s traditional standings and roles in society were removed via the patriarchal ideas of Pākehā culture during colonisation. While I was reading it, I felt pieces clicking into place for me, like I was discovering something I ought to have been taught long ago. Reading it has been quite a moving experience for me.
