Rate this book
The workbook and reader contains classic and contemporary readings and exercises that illuminate and expand on the basic concepts introduced in the text, which range from beginning to intermediate in skill level. A special feature of the workbook/reader is a series of exercises drawn from a single language that is designed to show students different levels of analysis. Each section will conclude with a pointer to the companion web site, where students will find additional exercises and readings, links to relevant web sites, study questions, and key words to guide them in additional readings in the InfoTrac's collection of articles.

This workbook/reader when used with the main text by the same author is a great way of getting practice with the basics of linguistics through exercises in phonetics, historical linguistics, etc. The readings are very good and thought provoking. I especially enjoyed the paper by Jimm Good Tracks titled “Native American Non-Interference” and the last selection in the book titled “Mock Spanish: A Site for the Indexical Reproduction of Racism in American English” by Jane H. Hill. If you are reading the main text I strongly recommend this workbook/reader as it definitely adds to the experience and deepens the level of discussion of the concepts presented in the text.
