Burnie, D. (2007). The Kingfisher first dinosaur picture atlas. New York: Kingfisher. Citation created by: Meagan Moremen Call Number: REF 912 Description: An illustrated atlas showing the locations where each dinosaur species is believed to have lived. Content/scope: This illustrated atlas shows the origins of dinosaurs by placing pictures of them on a two-page map. The book divides up the information by continent where some facts are listed. A few photographs of actual fossils are provided. This book is intended for ages 5-8 according to Kirkus Reviews. Accuracy/Authority: Kingfisher produces a wide variety of reference material. Arrangement/Presentation: Information is organized by continent. Some photographs of real fossils are provided but most are illustrations. Table of Contents, glossary, and an index are also in this book. Relation to Similar Works: Prior to writing this book, the author wrote several Eyewitness books, also in the areas of science. Timeliness/Permanence: This book would only need to be replaced as new information changes what scientists believe about the origins of dinosaur species. Cost: $10.95 Rationale for Selection: I selected this book for my reference collection because in my observations the nonfiction section was weak as well especially in the sciences. Professional Review: Kirkus Reviews, 19487428, 5/15/2008, Vol. 76, Issue 10
This is a nonfiction book with facts about dinosaurs. We never made it through this book. We may visit it again in the future when the girls are a little older. I think at their age level there are others better suited for them. At this point just interested in exposing them to minimal information to feed their natural curiosity.
