This is the third book I have read by LM Preston, and I still find myself transported to her world. Unbreakable Darkness is technically the third book in the vigilant series. While the first two books Insatiable Darkness and Caged Fire take place at the same time as this book, they are from the perspective of Dexter’s older sister EmVee.

While Unbreakable Darkness is like Insatiable Darkness, it is the prequel of Dexter’s story after the family moves to Newport Rhode Island. We first meet Dexter on his first day at a new school, back in New York his 6’4” frame was considered one of the largest students, the students male and female in Newport made him feel average sized. Dexter is the second oldest in his family after EmVee, with twin younger brother and sister Reese and Rei. The first day of school goes from bad to worse when his sister Rei texts him needing help that led to him getting pulled over and arrested by Detective Whalen. When his father Max arrives to pick him up the Detective offers to let him go with no charge if he will agree to being an informant at the high school for him. Students have been disappearing since the end of the previous school year and all through the summer, with no leads the police are concerned. The top athletic students continue to go missing without anyone filing police reports. Months go by and Dexter feels he is finally getting the chance to achieve his dreams. He is on the football team working towards being an elite, promised it would lead to a pro football career after high school. Falling head over heels for London, his mentor Grady’s little sister. Only now he is beginning to question everything about the town of Newport, his girlfriend is keeping secrets linked to the cuts and bruises that appear and disappear all over her body. He witnesses unimaginable events in the woods, vampire looking creatures, one of which he “kills”, giant hybrid spiders with female torsos and faces, told that if they survive making it out of the woods back to their cars they move on to the next stage. Numerous warnings begin making him think he is not crazy that he should be questioning things but his hunger to be a pro footballer is all he wants in the world, and he would do anything and everything he can to succeed in the initiation process.

I cannot wait to read the next book to learn the rest of Dexter’s journey in Scepter of Fire Book 2 of the Vigilant Series. LM Preston’s ability to build the story and characters is beyond amazing. Several characters overlap between the first two books of EmVee’s POV but this book builds on them, we learn more about them and how they are weaved into every one’s story.

Much like EmVee, Dex has a story of intrigue and excitement when they move to the new town. He doesn't want to be there any more than his siblings, and he's definitely not letting anyone run his life. He's always been a bit troubled, but it isn't until he reaches this new destination and meets the girl who captures his heart that he finds out just how much trouble can be stirred up in this new home, one that he's discovering may not be easy, if it's even possible at all, to escape from.

I am loving how this author is helping us get to know each of the siblings as they work through their teenage angst and the trouble that multiplies as they experience the paranormal around them. These stories are each exciting and heart stopping, and they paint a picture that connects everyone in a web of the author's construct. There are obvious evils and moments where the good gets a bit murky. And every move one makes affects the others. I am so excited to read the subsequent books to find out what happens next. These are amazing and thrilling and YA books for any paranormal lover no matter what age.

You definitely have to read these books in order. So, all these .5 in the book numbers and more than one prequel is doing my head in so let me try to get it straight.

Insatiable Darkness is Book 0.5 in the Vigilant series and the prequel to Caged Fire Book 1 both are EmVee’s story.

Unbreakable Darkness is Book 1.5 in the series, but actually takes place at the same time as the first two books. It is Dexter’s story and is actually the prequel to Scepter of Fire Book 2. I know there are other books but I will worry about them later. Hope this helps.

These books are YA paranormal supernatural stories mixed with fantasy and science fiction. There is adventure and suspense, betrayal and mystery, danger and sacrifice, paranormal beings/creatures and magic and much, much more in this fast-paced and action-packed tale.

Dexter finds himself staring Trouble in the face more than he likes but unfortunately it seems to find him where ever he goes. Now it’s time to face it head on he only hopes he survives to tell the tale.

It took me a while to get into the flow of these books but now I am intrigued.

This book was so clever with how it was written, and the paranormal aspect of it was very much done perfectly. The book brought on a lot of intrigue and kept me guessing all the way through!

Reading about Dexter was amazing! I loved his backstory and learning about him, who he was and is, and what his whole story line was about! The book intrigued me, as well as kept me interested. and I kept on reading to see what would happen next! Something I love that the amazing author does in their books, is how each character's story in a book relates to another. I think it is creative and very clever! Honestly this author is amazing at all they do and create! I love this series and this book! Truly love it!

I cannot say enough good things about this amazing author and the stories that they create! Each one leaves me wanting more. You must read this book and series for sure! Highly recommend!

“Dex’s father took his hand, tried to pull the ring off again. ‘It’s the ring! Where’d you get this? It’s evil magic.” That sentence explains the story. I love a good book that can pull you in and just keep stringing you along to the end. This one did just that by keeping the story adventurous and challenging. The family and school drama itself made for some wonderful writing. The series will flow better if you read the first book in the series. This book is #1.5 in the order. The way the story pretty much picks up and continues from the last book is smooth sailing. The author throws in a few plot twists that can surprise you. What makes the book great is that the story picks up but the POV changes. Fantastic tale that left me with a cliffhanger. Time to read the next book. If you love paranormal romance, you might like this. It is geared to young adults but the adults enjoy it too.

This is book 1.5 of the Vigilant Series. And just like the previous books in the series it is a great paranormal story that will keep the reader gripped.

In this book we follow Dexters story. Since moving with his family things seem to be going from bad to worse. Dex always seems to attract trouble and it seems moving to a new place hasn't changed that. However things start to take a dangerous twist when he gets involved in things he doesn't understand and starts to unravel secrets he shouldn't know about.

Add to this a romance, a murder mystery where kids are going missing and a plot twist that involves something wrong with the football team and cheerleaders and a magical ring and this book becomes one read you can't put down. This story is told through Dexter's eyes and his reactions to the situations happening around him.

Unbreakable Darkness is Book #1.5 in the Vigilant series by L.M Preston. It is actually set before the events in Book #1, Caged Fire. This story is from Dex’s point of view- but also adds to the growing ‘bigger picture’ of the series, so far. This book is also the prequel to Scepter of Fire (Book #2).
Dex’s life was turned upside down, and his big football dreams went up in smoke, when his father moved the family from New York to a much smaller city. He seems to be a magnet for trouble, soon finds himself in jail. Things just seem to slide downhill from there. But what a journey of discovery he is thrust into…
This continues the intriguing YA fantasy series with action, adventure, mystery, the supernatural/paranormal, drama, danger, family, emotion, discovery, love, and intensity.
Bring on Book #2!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, L.M. Preston.

A story full of death, danger, and darkness.
Dex only made a few stupid mistakes but look where it led him. Into much more trouble than one would expect. Ending up broken-hearted and trying to escape the inevitable hunt, he realizes too late what was at stake.
Short and fast read that gives the reader the chills and creeps, hope to close your eyes and erase the pictures it painted in your head. Rush of action combined with teenage love and high school drama, that is a concoction a YA lover can enjoy, if he/she is willing to accept the level of violence included.

I am really enjoying each and every book in this series, this one included. They all seem to add to much to the series as a whole and yet stand out as a single book. I loved the main character in this particular story. He carried it for me and I really connected with him and his journey. The story was exciting and gripping from the moment you start reading. I struggled to put it down once I had started reading.
So much seems to happen in this book, I was swept away by it all and loved each and every moment. This is a really strong series I am thoroughly enjoying it all.

Dex doesn't look for trouble it just kinda finds him.
Like EmVee he had a dream taken away by the move, he was working to become a pro football player.
He ran a stop sign, was taken to jail and over heard the officer and his dad making a deal that involves him to drop the charges.
Things aren't right with the football team and players and cheerleaders are missing or killed by some animal.
This is what was happening to Dex and his point of view.

Great book and series! I really enjoyed learning more about the family and back storyline. An easy read and fun! Kept you wondering what was going to happen next! Dexter definitely finds himself in trouble and situations where he’s risking his life. I really like how this can be a standalone book or connects the dots in the series. I love LM Preston’s books! I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series Scepter of Fire!

This was a good story alone but since I’ve read EmVees story’s I feel I understand it much better than if I hadn’t. I loved getting a better look inside the “elite” and how and why the characters were changing. I liked too that this story gave us more insight on the Lewis family to get more connected.

Unbreakable Darkness is a prequel to then next book in the Vigilant Series and I loved it! EmVee’s brother Dexter is the main character in this book and fills in some of the backstory from book one. Dexter just wants to play football but trouble seems to follow him everywhere. Amazing new young adult series I can’t wait to see what happens next in Scepter of Fire!

I really enjoyed reading this book. The story is told from Dex's POV, and he never realizes the dangers around him until it seems like he's in a bit over his head. If you enjoy fantasy tales that fall within the YA lit spectrum, you will love reading this book and the Vigilent series.

Great story

Love Dex. He is a great hero. His interaction with Yori. And the way he was about to fight against the lure of the ring. I would recommend this book for people who like paranormal with a twist.

Dexter is generally a good guy, but trouble always finds him. True to Preston’s other books, I love this book as well. Can’t wait to see what the next book holds in store for Dex.

When I first started this book I was a little confused about the time line. Once I figured it out I was able to get into it more. I think the book was great and definitely worth a read. I struggle with reading books that are in the third person point of view but I was able to really get into this book and enjoy it. I definitely recommend giving this a read!

This one threw me for a loop at first! It's because I read this one after I had read "Caged Fire". "Unbreakable Darkness" actually takes place right before "Caged Fire"! This book tells about a family who is uprooted and moved to what they thought was just another town but don't realize that it's another world to what they are used to! Dex doesn't like this place and tries to find his place in society as it is. But finds something out of this world that he didn't think was possible. In the mean time he falls in love with London who has an agenda of her own! So do they actually get together or does Dex find someone else? Does Dex finally find his place in society or does he run for the hills?
If you have read any of L.M. Preston's books and have loved them, then this one will be no different. I absolutely love these books and do suggest to read them.
