TERRY GRAFF: BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE

Terry Graff is a distinguished cultural leader who has made numerous significant contributions to the advancement of the visual arts on a regional, provincial, national and international level. Throughout his multi-disciplinary career as a gallery director, curator, art writer, art educator, and visual artist, he has been a tireless advocate for the centrality of art in people’s lives and as an essential creative and transformative ingredient for the health and well-being of communities.

Graff has served as Director/Chief Curator of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton New Brunswick; Director/CEO of the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Director/Chief Curator of Rodman Hall Arts Centre, St. Catharines, Ontario; and Director/Chief Curator of Confederation Centre Art Gallery, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. In addition, he was director of the artist-run Struts Gallery, Sackville, New Brunswick, and Education Curator at the Art Gallery of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario; taught visual arts as a high school art teacher in Ontario and New Brunswick; taught sculpture and drawing for the Department of Fine Arts at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick; and served as Chairman of several boards, including ArtsAtlantic Magazine, the Friends of the Mi’kmaq, and the Museums Association of Saskatchewan.

Born in Cambridge (Galt), Ontario, Graff studied Fine Art at the Doon School of Fine Arts, Doon, Ontario, and Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology, London, Ontario. He received a B.A. in Fine Art from the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, and a B.Ed in Visual Arts from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario. He also studied art history, philosophy of art, media arts, and art education at
Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, received a postgraduate diploma in Fine Art (M.F.A. equivalent) from the Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, the Netherlands, and holds a M.A. in Art Education from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Graff has long been recognized for outstanding creative achievement in exhibition development and presentation, for innovative approaches to collecting, collections management, and collections-based research, and for excellence in education programming and community engagement. He has curated over 200 exhibitions, written an extensive number of articles, catalogues, and books on a wide range of contemporary and historical artists and art subjects, and has conducted numerous lectures and workshops. Among Graff’s many noteworthy curatorial projects was “Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery,” a large-scale international touring exhibition and major publication that highlighted seventy-five of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s most significant works of art. Awards in recognition of his various cultural contributions across Canada include the Fanshawe College Distinguished Alumni Award; The Commemorative Medal for the Centennial of Saskatchewan (Official Honour of the Crown recognizing individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Province of Saskatchewan); the Christina Sabat Award for Art Criticism in Atlantic Canada sponsored by the Sheila Hugh MacKay Foundation; and two eagle feathers from the Mi’kmaq First Nation for his work in promoting the art of Indigenous artists. As a visual artist, Graff has been the recipient of major sculpture commissions, and his art has toured regionally, nationally, and internationally and is included in public and private collections in Canada, the U.S.A. and Europe.
