Though this book was a little hard to follow sometimes because each chapter is divided up into the stories of particular families or individuals, this book certainly does a good job of looking at Chinatown's development up to the time of publication (1989). I might recommend reading it along with other books relating Chinatown or Chinese-American history such as Iris Chang's "The Chinese in America" which I found useful for giving a more general view of patterns, attitudes, and challenges over time (It was also published more recently, sometime in the 2000s). Undoubtedly, the individuals in this book made valuable contributions and helped shape SF's Chinatown into what it is today but more general books help to ground these experiences into a bigger context.
