The story of American Express is a fascinating one, filled with interesting and sometimes quirkly characters who--through a combination of brains, perseverance and luck--shaped the company's development during the past century and a half. This oversized hardcover is richly illustrated with photographs and advertisements from the American Express Corporate Archives.

Eighth book of the year! Bought this one to learn a bit more about the company I’ll be working for come September. Did a great job of fulfilling this purpose, but the text did a bit marketing-y (it was written by someone internal, so that checks out). I actually do think this might be a cool read for someone outside of my position, though — there are a lot of interesting asides throughout the narrative (e.g., did you know that the American Express logo used to be a bulldog?) as well as pictures of old money orders, card designs, executives, etc. that make it also visually appealing. Plus, it’ll look kinda of attractive on a coffee table.
