My Tales Growing Up In Long Beach

Rate this book
This book contains my stories about growing up in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s in Long Beach, California. It begins with an idyllic childhood playing cowboys and Indians, trading baseball cards and staying outside until the streetlights came on. We had the “Milkman,” the “Donut Man” and the “Ice Cream Man.”Having a large park across the street and many kids my age in the neighborhood, it was perfect for playing football, basketball and my favorite, baseball. As I become a teenager my life takes a turn. I discover cars, girls and the secret of having an alcoholic parent. The stories in this book follow the culture of our time. We had our first jobs, spent time with our friends at the Towne and Crest theaters, worked on our cars, went to dances, listened to great music and spent hours on the baseball diamond. Each chapter is an individual story from the memory and events of my youth that will hopefully reconnect you to your own childhood.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because the setting was in my hometown during the years I lived there. This non-fiction book was written by Chuck Mosley, a native Californian, who has shared his life story of growing up in Long Beach, California in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It is well written and shares some fun, nostalgic stories of things kids do while growing up! Hence:The Cowboy and Indian faze, baseball card trading, dealing with the ice cream trucks, etc…I love the mentioning of the local businesses, like the Crest Theater and Schere Park which spur on my own memories of these places during the years.
Chucks’s long lasting relationships with his group of friends and his endearing love of family speaks loudly of a stable guy. His passion for cars, sports and girls illuminate great stories of love, lessons and learnings. This book was very enjoyable and a good read!
