The hyper-powered world of Crackdown (Xbox) has made its way to the comic page! In the not-so-distant future, civilized society is more plugged-in and interconnected than ever - but criminal organizations are growing more connected as well, forming unholy alliances, and plotting for an unprecedented campaign against the world. When a series of devastating blackout attacks plunge major metropolitan areas into darkness and chaos, the global population is terrified, traditional law enforcement is overwhelmed - and it's up to The Agency, an elite international crime-fighting task force, to restore peace and deliver justice, by any means necessary.
Crackdown is a great example of a game series that really doesn't need -- or benefit from -- a comic tie-in. It's a series about gameplay, exploring a city, taking down gangs, collecting orbs, and growing your power. None of that excitement and feeling of progression carries over to the Crackdown comic.
The story is a basic prequel to Crackdown 3, but only barely -- the game's story wasn't particularly good or memorable, but I don't recall any of the agents from the comic appearing in the game, the city in the comic is different from the one in the game, and the introduction to the game's main villain isn't anything particularly interesting or revelatory if you play the game at all.
Some of the art is good, with colors that pop off the page and some good splash pages, but oftentimes it's dark or repetitive -- very unlike the bright cityscapes of Crackdown 3. It also relies heavily on narration, but since these are new characters that we never see again, it simply wasn't interesting to see their thoughts. And while characters swear a lot, it's bleeped out in a very off-putting way with grey blocks instead of the more traditional dashes or symbols or just actually swearing.
Overall I can't say I recommend this one. If you are somehow a die-hard Crackdown fan who cares about the story of Crackdown 3, and I don't think this describes anyone but more power to you if it does, then go ahead and pick this up. Otherwise, there's really nothing here for you.
