The Cheetahs of de Wildt

Rate this book
Working in conjunction with the Pretoria zoo in South Africa, Ann van Dyk's efforts over two decades has resulted in major achievements in the breeding of what was once a threatened species - the cheetah. Over the years more than 400 cheetah cubs have been born on her farm in the Magaliesberg, west of Pretoria. This is the story of Ann's efforts, at times cruelly thwarted by man and nature, and at times jubilantly successful.

I read this book after visiting the Ann van Dyk's center at De Wildt. She has done amazing work, with so much passion, but of course there were many volunteers and donors who assisted her. This book tells the story of the ground-working effort, research, sweat and tears that went into trying to save the cheetah's from extinction. I understand it all so much better now and agree with Ann - too many people on this planet and the more we have the more we will encroach on the space that the wild animals need to survive. A must read for those who love the outdoors and wildlife.

A wonderful achievement by a woman with a vision to breed cheetahs on her farm De Wildt, to save these magnificent animals from extinction. Working with support from Pretoria zoo, she succeeded in breeding not only cheetahs, but wild dogs and the riverine rabbits. This is a deeply moving story by a special lady with a deep love for all the animals in her care.
