The younger generation know Nureyev and Baryishnikov, but they don't know the story of the genius that makes people want to see these newer Russians. Nijinsky was "it". What more is there to say. This gorgeous book shows photos of the costumed Nijinsky in his famous roles: Rose Ghost, Petrouchka, Slave in Scheherazade, Afternoon of a Faun...so very sad that there aren't any significant movie clips of him in motion.

A genius caught literally in mid-air. Nijinsky as Scherezade, Nijinsky the Harlequin, and triumphantly Nijinsky dancing Stravinsky's RITES OF SPRING. Nijinsky was an originator of the modern world every bit equal to Freud, Joyce, and Schoenburg. He took inspiration from the soil of his beloved Russia and ripped apart the confines of ballet dance with his leaps, choreographed by himself. These magnificent photographs documenting the length of his career, annotated by the great Lincoln Kirstein, preserve for us those magic moments when Nijinsky leapt off the earth and into legend.
