This was my second reading of this and I still had a lot of fun doing so! This is the debut novel by authors Jordan Bennett and Michael Jay and follows a group of young men and women as the world that they know ends in the wake of a strange power surge and a new one begins, bringing with it new and old magic as well as monsters with only one goal in mind - kill. As they struggle to survive and adjust to their new abilities, they travel across the land, looking for survivors and answers, and end up playing a large role in shaping this new world and fighting the evil attempting to consume it.

I'll say it again, this is a fun read! It's dark, yet humorous. Horrifying, yet fascinating. Full of adventure, magic, and pop culture references which had me laughing out loud many times. A great start to a fantasy series that I am eagerly looking forward to seeing unfold. I've started the sequel and am already halfway through it, so I'm sure I'll have another review to share soon. 😉

I definitely recommend this book, especially if you enjoy discovering new authors. And these guys are rolling out the stories! So check them out!

It was a decently good book, though the rune system used within is very similar to the one used in The Shadowhunters, with a few tweaks, and there seemed at times to be some plot holes. Perhaps they were not plot holes and instead the author wanted us to use our own imagination, I don’t know. I did like all the references to D&D, but never knowing “why” certain people were turned into monsters, some got powers, and some were normal would have been nice. Perhaps it’s in the next book? Also, how did the initial energy wave even happen? Who started it? Who is this crazy Makoris guy and what’s the deal with the false angel? Why never reveal the reason for Gwen’s deception? It’s a fast paced book where lots happens, but many questions remain unanswered, I may read the next one, but I will likely take a break first.

It is like a sword art online meets d&d mash up. I loved the character development and pace. It has a strong story line with nice twists and turns without revealing everything so the reader is wanting to see where the story goes. With all good stories it is hard to put down and even harder to wait to see what happens. In short it is a great fun read!
