Young Aknik embarks on a perilous quest across the Arctic tundra to prove himself a brave and successful trapper, in an enthralling story of an Inupiat boy, set in the beautiful wilderness of the Arctic and including a glossary of indigenous terms.
Life as presented here isn't pretty, but it feels real. This is a coming of age story that simultaneously allows a glimpse into another way of life, one that is vanishing. Although it's fiction, the story is so believable, that I think my older nephew and nieces would like it. I will either read it with them or ask them to read it so we can talk.
