"These children got help. Some were protected by the state: others went to shelters. Some talked to adults who listened, believed, and kept them safe" (Page 14).
"If you are witnessing family violence of any sort or if you suspect that someone you know is a victim of this kind of abuse, you should carefully monitor that person for signs of uncharacteristic behavior and then seek help. You may want to talk to a parent, guidance counselor, clergy memeber, or some other adult whom you trust" (page 27).
"It can be difficult for a child to report abuse. But it must be done. Abuse does not stop on its own. It must be ended with outside help. Teachers, therapists, social workers, and even other relatives will help to get the abused child into a safe home. SPEAKING OUT ABOUT ABUSE IS THE ONLY RSPONSIBLE THING TO DO - FOR YOURSELF, FOR YOUR FAMILY, AND EVEN FOR THE ABUSER (emphasis mine). Your life will probably become more difficult before it gets better, but eventually it will get better. IF NOTHING IS DONE ABOUT THE ABUSE IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE (emphasis mine) (page 40-41).
