Reporter Alec O'Brian didn't believe Christine McKinley's life was in danger until his story about her led to another life-threatening "accident." It looked as if someone really wanted to hurt her. There was nothing for a hero to do except find out why.
ALEC'S PLAN INVOLVED RULES:
1) They needed to escape to a secluded hideout. 2) Alec needed to learn everything about Christine. 3) Heated, passionate lovemaking was highly recommended. 4) Under no circumstances was Christine to fall in love with him.
Too late, Alec realized he'd fallen in love. Once he finished rescuing Christine, would she have any more use for a hero?
The novel Rescuing Christine by Alyssa Dean is about reporter Alec O’Brian stumbling into a dangerous situation after writing a story about Christine McKinley and then finding himself drawn into protecting her when it becomes clear someone is out to harm her. What begins as a rescue mission to hide Christine away and keep her safe soon becomes a passionate, complicated romance, as Alec finds he can’t abide by the “no falling in love” rule he’d imposed on himself.
From the moment I started reading, I was swept up by the tension between safety and desire. The premise, danger lurking because of Christine’s story, forcing Alec to whisk her away to a secluded hideout delivered enough suspense that I kept reading because I cared what would happen. Then there’s the emotional undercurrent: Christine doesn’t just need protection, she needs someone who sees her as more than a headline, and Alec’s growing feelings for her felt genuine, not rushed. What resonated with me was the messy humanity of it two people thrown together under pressure, forced into intimacy, yet grappling with fear, vulnerability and what love might mean when you begin as rescuer and rescued.
That said, the romance is quite intense, and the “rules” Alec sets, especially the vow that Christine must not fall for him, can at times feel like a thin setup for drama. For readers who prefer a gentler, more gradual build‑up to love, some of the pacing felt a little abrupt. But if you enjoy escapist contemporary romance with heat, emotional stakes, and a dash of danger, this hits the mark.
Overall I’d give Rescuing Christine a 3 out of 5 stars. It's not flawless, but it charmed me more than once and left me smiling at the idea of vulnerability leading to unexpected love.
