Somerville and Ross: A biography

Rate this book
Edith Somerville and her cousin Martin Ross (the pen-name of Violet Martin of Ross) have had a large and devoted public ever since they published in collaboration Some Experiences of an Irish R.M. What has not been generally known, however, is that they left a great mass of private papers - 102 volumes of diary, 6,000 letters and a huge miscellany of other manuscripts relating to their personal life. This hoard of humor, tragedy, strange happenings and much curious detail was used by Maurice Collis as the source for a biography of two gifted, complicated and very remarkable women.

Although this book was not a page turner, it was very interesting. It told the story of Somerville & Ross, more about Edith Somerville of Castletownshend, a place I live in West Cork.

They wrote the well know stories called the Irish RM. They talk of an age long gone but kept alive in this book. Fascinating to explore the old norms of a society lost apart from in literature. A lot of talk of seances which I take as being fake! Well written and interesting!
