Since the beginning of time, women have been made to feel bad about themselves. From our dress sizes to our careers, from our parenting skills to simply having an opinion, modern women come under immense, relentless pressure to look and behave in certain ways.
The stories we tell ourselves can lead to some dark emotions. They can even result in us hating ourselves – and other women.
It doesn’t have to be this way, though. We just need to realise our power, our value and our worth.
This book, if you allow it to, could change your life…
In a deeply personal book, award-winning blogger Katie Portman talks candidly about her own challenges as a woman and shares the tools she uses to overcome them. She invites fellow females to open their eyes to the beauty, power and potential that exists within them.
How would your life change if you truly believed ‘I AM GOOD ENOUGH’?
Katie Portman is a non-fiction writer and accredited personal stylist whose career has been shaped by a deep commitment to honest storytelling as well as personal expression.
She is the author of the style book You Don't Need More Clothes, and A Little Pick Me Up, a self-help memoir recommended by fitness brand Sweaty Betty London as a top happiness read for women.
A lifelong love of books and magazines led her first into magazine journalism and later into blogging.
Katie's truthful, personal essays earned her recognition within the blogging world, including multiple awards and also led to her first book deal.
Her work sits at the intersection of writing, identity and style - helping women feel more confident in both their inner and outer worlds.
Katie is also a mum to two children who adores reading (naturally!), travelling and is more than partial to a statement earring or two.
In fact if you ever bump into her, you should fully expect to see her wearing a pair, as she feels naked without them.
A proud Northerner, she lives with her husband, children and two cats in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England.
This is such an uplifting, helpful, pocket-size book of positivity! It is something that I will be returning to again and again when I am feeling low. It identifies those negative feelings that plague us all and helps us to not only learn from them, but to try and find the positives. The little ‘pick ups’ at the end of each chapter are great bits to take away and summarise the chapters so you can easily flick to them to remind you of all the wonderful positivity techniques given. It reminds readers to talk to yourself more positively and remind yourself that you are good enough! I loved it. Thank you to @poutinginheels @thewritinghall and @lovebookstours for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Rarely has a book got its title so right! A Little Pick Me Up does exactly what it promises.
Kate Portman talks to the reader as if she was having tea with a friend, sharing her wisdom in a funny and light way. But her message is important and powerful. While I was reading this book, I kept having ‘I never noticed that but it’s so true’ moments. You know, the things you do, you are told, without even thinking about it. Be nice, be pretty. Many little elements resonated with me. Society still burden us women with shackles, and the author’s hope is to help set us free.
I really enjoyed the different chapters focusing on a particular subject. My favorite were dread and guilt. I nodded as my eyes flew across the Kindle screen. I recognized my own behavior, and was pleasantly surprised by the little advice section at the end of each chapter. It’s perfect to remember what you’ve learned and make it stick.
Do I recommend A Little Pick Me Up? Yes!
It is a book every woman needs to feel lighter, be happier, and get rid of the unwanted pressure we are under. I give it bonus points as it contains bits of advice I was given to ease my anxiety! Like the way our inner dialogue impacts on our mood or the way we react to what happens to us. It is essential to learn how to be kinder to ourselves.
I also need to thank the author for smashing the idea that we need to be perfect and that we can have it all… Read A Little Pick Me Up if you feel you’re missing something, if you think you’re doing something wrong, or if you simply need a gentle reminder you’re amazing as you are.
A Little Pick Me Up is an inspiring little book which is easy to read and easy to relate to.
Several themes are examined - jealousy, fear, dread, powerlessness, regret, guilt, hate. The author reminds us of the negative impact they can all have on our lives. She also comments that we don't know what's happening in someone's life, that nobody's life is perfect no matter how it may appear.
The book encourages us to recognise and use negative thoughts and feelings to work on ways to improve ourselves and make ourselves feel better. Remember that people may well be jealous of you! We should consciously look for things in our lives every day to be grateful for. This really can make a difference.
The are helpful little pick-ups to take away at the end of each chapter, summarising the main points and what we can learn from each negative emotion. The one piece of advice I'm going to take with me from this book is "Just aim to be the best version of you at any age". Wise words indeed.
A Little Pick Me Up is written in a friendly, positive and encouraging style and I really recommend it to anyone who is feeling down about life or themselves. Do pick up this book because as the title suggests, it really will give you a boost. I think I agreed with every single word written, there was so much common sense and encouraging words. I am going to try to remember some of the thoughts and suggestions and apply them to my life whenever I need a little pick me up.
I was gifted this book by @lovebooktours and @poutinginheels for an honest review.
I’ll admit this isn’t the type of book I would usually go for but, intrigued, I began to read and so I became aware of how very glad I did. It’s essentially a self-help book for women (though a lot of people would be able to find some good pointers in here) to overcome negative thoughts and feelings about themselves and alter their perspective for a more positive view on their body, careers, behaviour and anything around them.
The book is split into chapters highlighting the negative emotions that usually accompany women; Jealousy, Fear, Guilt, Dread, Powerlessness, Regret and Hate. After each chapter there is a handy summer of ‘pick ups’ so the main points are highlighted in a quick and clear way. I myself found the chapter Fear to be quite good for me as a writer at heart.
The book even comes with a couple of neat postcards, one ot keep and the other to give away to someone else. These cards are to remind you of the pivotal point of the book; that you are good enough.
Overall, this is a feel-good book with some feel-good techniques to possibly help you with everyday life. Compact in size, so you can take this anywhere you go for a quick ‘pick me up’. I wouldn’t say it’s the best in the world, but for what you get it’s a nice amount of positivity in a small, easy to carry book.
This beautiful little book is actually a powerhouse of wisdom and grace for women everywhere. I loved Katie's heartfelt advice on dealing with some of our darkest emotions and could really feel the depth of her feeling and experience shining through the words on the page. From body image to freedom of guilt, from dropping regret to learning from our fears, Katie gives great advice in a friendly and all-inclusive way, and I particularly loved what she had to say about us women being sure to support each other. It's a beaut of a book!
A well written and relatable little book. The perfect advice for any woman. Truly uplifting and positive. I managed to read this in one sitting with its easy flow writing style. Several times i have gone back and re-read certain parts.
Portman shares her personal experiences to help enlighten women about their lives and how to get the most out of it (which definitely makes it more relatable!) She writes about feelings such as:guilt, jealousy, fear and more. These (in my opinion) are very universal and have been present in different areas of my own life. At the end of each chapter, there are "PICK UPS" to take away which are super helpful and good at summarising the key points to keep in order to battle against these emotions. One of the stand out 'chapters'/sections for me was the discussion about fear, and one of the quotes i picked out is: "physically, fear and excitement feel the same, but the difference mentally is huge! Where possible, learn to flip your mindset" As a young female reading this, it struck a chord and has encouraged me to think differently about what is fear and what isn't. This small self-help, mindset shifting book is something that i think every woman should read if they can and its written in a very friendly way which makes it accessible to all!!
