I couldn’t have found this book at a better time. I’m transitioning from my business as an independent software developer to a software consulting firm. Marketing a firm is a whole different kettle of fish from marketing myself as an individual. The task seemed daunting, so I had planned in my budget to hire a marketing consultant. After reading this book I no longer feel like I need to spend thousands on a marketing consultant. This isn’t the first book I’ve read on marketing, either. I have several others in my shelf, to include a few of Seth Godin (inspiring, sure, but a little idealistic and nothing immediately actionable). There were parts of this book that didn’t work for me, but I can’t even knock a star off for it because of the sheer amount of valuable and ACTIONABLE information.

PROS
-This book helped me realize that I’m the best person for marketing my business, and well positioned to do so. I have a huge wealth of knowledge about my industry, my business, and my clients.
-In addition to feeling like I can successfully market my own business, by the end of the book, I felt like I was equipped to make it happen. I was able to immediately integrate many of the things I learned into business planning.
-A quick read, and an impressive toolkit. After reading for just a few evenings in less than a week, during a very busy week, I walked away with very clear action items.
-Well named as Marketing Survival Guide: I can see myself using this book as a reference long-term and other small business owners doing the same.
-This book is well organized; great division of information in four parts. The reader can easily go back and find something they want to read again. I’ve already done this, in particular, the chapters in the section “Be Unique.”
-This book changed the way I see advertisements: Yesterday when I checked the physical mail, instead of throwing out all of the advertisement mailers I was excited to read them all to see what I could learn.

CONS
-The chapters are very short and to-the-point. This might bother someone looking for an in-depth study of marketing concepts.
-Some of the recommendations and concepts in this book were things I already knew or am doing. For example, my business is in the tech industry, so I’m the last person that needs convincing to use technology to save time and be more efficient!
-There are so many action items that if you don’t take the author’s advice in the introduction, and you stop each chapter until you do the action item, it’d take ages to finish the book. Some people I know would be overwhelmed by that and never finish the book. The author’s advice is to read straight through, then read it a second time to do the action items. That’s great advice but it might not work for everyone. The way I did it was read it straight through, took notes on chapters I wanted to revisit, and the action items I could do immediately I did right away. That was the best way for me since I don’t have the attention span to read a book cover to cover twice.

If marketing seems like a daunting task to your small business, this is a must-read. When I run into any of my friends/acquaintances that are in need of a marketing rescue, this is the book I’ll be recommending.
