Making the Team

Rate this book
She's the hottest professional softball player in the country.

All my teammates want to be her or be with her. They think the fact that she retired and took a job coaching our college team is the greatest thing that ever happened to the Marchant State Hawks.

They don't know the real Penelope Flynn.

I've spent the last eight years of my life trying to erase the pain she caused me back in high school when she broke my heart and left me crying in the dugout. If she thinks she's going to ruin my senior year of college, she has another thing coming.

All I need is to make it through the playoffs, keep my grades at a passable level, and hopefully sign a professional contract of my own, but whenever she's near me, I just can't think straight.

Maybe it's because I simply hate her so much...

or maybe, it's time to finish what we started.

Making the Team is a steamy full length 55,000 word lesbian romance novel featuring an enemies to lovers theme, a ragtag women's college softball team, and a guaranteed HEA.

Lark Maren was 'fired' as the sports editor of her high school newspaper back in 2001 because she was more interested in the juicy gossip behind the players than the actual games themselves.
After a (long enough) stint as a political analyst, she decided to get back to her roots and follow her love of writing about sports, this time on her own terms.
If you like steamy stories about athletic women competing their way through life and finding lesbian love along the way, Lark's got what you're looking for!

DNF@40%... It was too childish and the characters just weren’t mature enough, especially the coach. There’s a lot lacking and I was just not feeling this story.

This is more of a 3.5 rounded up book for me. It was mostly well-written but had some typos and punctuation errors sprinkled throughout. I think the thing that bothered me the most was the sudden jump from "I hate you for breaking my heart" to "I want to be with you forever." The book started off at a great pace, giving the reader some back story from both main character perspectives, and then casually strolling into the reason why they meet again years later. But the transition was awkward and felt a bit rushed. On the plus side (hence the rounding up to 4 stars), the sex scenes were incredibly hot and unique. There's also this underlying subplot about sport-related injuries and having passion for something, even if there are obstacles in your way, which is always a nice addition to a story for me. Although I wasn't the biggest fan of this book, I will probably read the next book from this author, based solely on her ability to write one hell of an intimate scene. What does that say about me as a reader? :)

This is primarily a low-budget sex romp. The almost instant transition from one-sided hate to full on partners is awkward at best. Marley's preschool temper tantrums are at complete odds with her position as the supposedly charismatic team captain. Finally, the depiction of an intercollegiate sports team is not at all believable.

It was okay with a HEA ending, though as I mentioned in my lone progress note (why doesn't iOS's Kindle app have a way to just click through to GoodReads in mid-story?) there's a lot of emo and nasty rivalry to the two succumbing first to their mutual attraction, and finally to trusting each other enough to love. I wanted to yell "High School's over, time to woman up!" in both their ears through the first half of the book.

Golden Girl HS Senior softball player Penelope broke HS Freshman's Marley's heart when she nastily put her girlfriend in as catcher for The Big Game over Marley. Now it's working class with a single arthritic mother Marley's Senior Year in College, and she's determined to get signed onto a Pro Softball Team So She Can Show Penelope Up -- only, who's hired as the team's new coach?

Do I Have to Close My Eyes to Guess...?

Penelope, who's from a "comfortable" family (she didn't require a full-ride scholarship, etc.), wants to make amends with Marley, but her own competitive streak kicks in when Marley angry rejects it and questions her authority at first. Marley's teammates are shocked to see their Team Captain, who's not at all like this, turn into an angry brat (there's no other word for her behavior) whenever Penelope's around giving orders.

Think the early parts of A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, only with Geena Davis as the Coach and Lori Petty countermanding her

What nobody knows, and Marley's determined to make sure nobody knows, is that she's starting to suffer from arthritis herself, which she keeps denying because if she doesn't get signed she has no future - !

All Right, Sweetie...

As my rating suggests, it's a decent book, especially once the two of them get together and work together. Though I have a question for any girls out there into team sports (which is utterly not me) -- are real Girl Jocks anything like these two? If so, I may pass on any more Lesbian Sports Romances....

Marley is in her senior year of college and is a star catcher on the school's softball team. When her team's coach has a baby, the school hires a temporary replacement to get them through the season. That replacement is Penny (Penelope), Marley's former high school crush who broke her heart and almost turned her off softball.

Since I like second chance romances and college settings, I chose to read this book. It is a decent story with interesting characters, though there are some inconsistencies and a few typos. The issue with Marley's worries about her physical condition, which appears to be rheumatoid arthritis, and her decision to hide it from teammates, is a strong plot point, especially since Penny's role in this is pivotal.

My biggest issue is how quickly these two went from guarded frenemies to forever lovers. That was a bit of a stretch.

But overall, it's a decent sports setting college age (New Adult) romance.

Competition can fuel your spirit but love heals your heart.

Penelope and Marley love softball more than anything. Penny broke Marley's heart her freshman year with words spoken for all the wrong reasons. They both needed to grow up. The characters meet in college during Marleys senior year. They are locked in a love - hate kind of relationship till they clear the air. Together the help each other face hard facts and try to move forward. The author gives well written syptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis with care in this story you can't put down. Two strong women conquer their insecurities and find a way to trust each other and manage to build an even stronger relationship together. This is a beautiful story with a hot and beautifully told connection with characters I loved from the beginning. I will be checking out more of Lark Karen's stories.

Girl jocks - gotta love it!

Nothing like a broken heart courtesy of your first love and idol! Only to use that heartache to spur your desire to succeed at all costs! Love the feeling of family you get when playing on a competitive sports team. This book has a happily ever after and a few hot f/f sex scenes - a quick and enjoyable read!

Kindle Unlimited seems to be overflowing with horrendous lesrom titles--and this is one of them. There isn't much of a story here, the characters are painfully immature, dialogue is atrocious, and there were numerous editorial errors throughout. Do yourself a favor and pass on this.

This was a good story, lots of steamy sex scenes, would if preferred more sports. But on the whole not a bad book.
