Many people have found The People's Bible to be the most reliable Bible commentary series published. It's the laypeople's Bible--down to earth, clearly written, easy to read and understand, filled with practical and contemporary applications. Each volume includes that book's complete text from the NIV Bible. The Christ-centered commentaries following the Scripture sections contain explanations of the text, historical background, maps, illustrations, and archaeological information. The People's Bible commentaries are great for personal or group study.

The first book of Chronicles traces the history of God's people from Adam to David. Throughout this history God reminded his people that the Messiah, a royal descendant of David, would come. When the Messiah did come, he established God's righteous rule over his people in a way far beyond the rule of any human king.

The Annals of the Days
'The Kingdom of God - God's royal rule - the working out of God's gracious, saving purpose in our lives and in all that happens.'
EXCELLENT!! [20 sticky tabs!] This book is giving me an entirely new perspective on reading the genealogies that are listed throughout the Bible! As he says, the genealogies will be worth whatever effort you put into them. So true! He says, rather than viewing it as reading through a phonebook (or skimming over), consider it to be like reading a war memorial that lists names. With each section he gives cross references to other books from all sections of the Bible. He compares to other listings and offers explanations. He cites other books of the Bible to share the family stories and offer explanations. He tells the reasons of the Chronicler, for giving more details for some (Levi), less for others (Dan, Zebulun). He shares the derivation of names and words. Throughout, are sections titled Meaning of These Verses for Us Today. He relates then (Adam to Israel) to now (all of us) with life application and meaning. This commentary has really opened my eyes and touched my heart, and I’m only on chapter 9 of 29! The beginning of the book of Chronicles is so much more than a list of names.
The remaining chapters tell of 'the exalted place of the tribes of Israel in God's plan, key role of David's royal house and importance of the temple and its services.' There are many reminders giving perspective of what the people returning from exile might remember or know of their pre-captivity history. My favorite verses 25:23-31, where the listing of names form a psalm of praise in Hebrew!

This book was written upon the return of Israel from exile. The chronicler reviews the lineage of David and the preparations David made to build the temple for the God of all Israel. David understood that all that is given, is given to us by our Lord, is given through His grace.

The chronicler shows us the thankful spirit-filled side of David contrasting this with the description of David in the book of Kings. David truly understood God's love and was a human spiritual leader in organizing Israel for the building of the temple. Each tribe had its place in being represented in this theocracy, a place where God could dwell and the people could worship him in their daily living. (3rd Reading)

Samuel and Kings show more of the human side of those who led Israel. In Chronicles, the focus is on the spiritual leadership as God saw Israel mature. He works through us to help us understand our relationship with him and in this book brought us a foreshadow of the one who came to be our spiritual king! (4th Reading)

Having the commentary really helps to sort things out and to understand why some things are written in the letter/included in the bible.
