My husband read this to me. We are both great Ian Carmichael fans because of Lord Peter Wimsey, and had high hopes to learn more about the actor’s experience with the series. Disappointingly, only one (very short) chapter is dedicated to the Wimsey saga, despite the fact that one could fairly consider it the pinnacle of Carmichael’s career. Nevertheless, the first part of the book (about his childhood, schooling, the pre-war years and the war experience) are a fascinating insight into the lives of almost-ordinary people at that time, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Sadly, it felt like the author “ran out of steam” towards the end.

I enjoyed this book, not least because I remember (not personally) so many of the personalities and sportsmen referred to. I did find it rather self centered but perhaps that is because I don't often read an autobiography. And what a long suffering wife he had. She seems to have been given little of his time and had to tolerate his obsessions, innocent I assume, with certain female actors
