There are moment in history we hear about, but never fully learn and understand. I believe this is one of them. In 1994 the small country of Rwanda was forever changed. And we should be too. While the details of this mass genocide are haunting, it is a stark reminder that man can do extremely evil things especially when left unchecked. An estimate of 800,000 to 1 million people lost their lives in 100 days time. Unheard of and absolutely horrifying. And even though moments like this are hard to read and watch about, we must. Because in order for history to not repeat itself, we must know history to begin with. This small book is insightful, impactful and gives the best overall view of the genocide that took place. May this moment and those souls never be forgotton.
This is a solid and concise review of the genocide and the steps taken to heal Rwanda after it was over. It's a great read for anybody interested in brushing up on the story. It's a must-read if you are heading to Rwanda and/or planning to visit the Genocide Memorial.
It is difficult to grasp how quickly the situation went from a divided populace to all-out slaughter of thy neighbor. It's even more puzzling that a country was able to recover from such violence perpetrated by those living together. You see the situation in Gaza today or the division of India/Pakistan in the 1940s and can't fathom such a quick resolution. You can say what you want about the Rwandan leadership (and they have their flaws!) but they pulled off something that is pretty much a miracle.
A very surface level look at 1994, and Rwanda since then. The research is super weak, and its a super surface level glide over a few events, with little analysis, depth, or comprehension by the author.
If you know 0% about Rwanda, you could learn something. If you know 5%, or have seen a couple movies about Rwanda, you are already past this, and it will teach you nothing.
Its really among the least strong books on Rwanda out there, definitely in the bottom 50%, probably much lower.
