Dinosaur Milly Jo has a beautiful singing voice, but when a storm rages and brings down a tree, it falls on top of Milly and she loses her lovely voice!
Can she find a new way to shine with the help of her friends?
Brought to life with bright artwork from Francesca Gambatesa which perfectly captures this hopeful and uplifting story.
The Dinosaur Who Lost Her Voice’ is a rhyming picture book by children’s author, Julie Ballard. Milly Jo is a dinosaur who lived many years ago. She had a beautiful singing voice and was very popular because she was able to entertain all the other dinosaurs to distract them from squabbling. One day a terrible event occurred which resulted in Milly losing her special gift. This is the story of how she overcame adversity with the help of her friends, to bring back happiness and harmony to her prehistoric world.
This book is aimed at children aged three-five years, so at four, Jude was the ideal reviewer for this story, not least because he’s a huge dinosaur fan. He engaged extremely well and read some of the easier words himself. He particularly liked the bright and cheerful artwork and was able to identify the colour of each dinosaur. He thought it was a shame that Milly had lost her voice and we got slightly sidetracked discussing the logistics of how this accident could have caused such a debilitating injury. We discussed how important it was for Milly to remain positive and through the help of others, concentrate on her strengths, rather than be sad about what she had lost.
This story has been thoughtfully written and very well presented. Hopefully it will resonate with young people who are living with any form of learning or communication difficulties. The message here is that they shouldn’t be defined by their limitations because, just like Milly, they too have hidden talents just waiting to be unlocked. They should accept the help of others which is freely and lovingly given to be the best possible version of themselves.
This is a delightful read with excellent illustrations and a straightforward story which will appeal to its target audience. It would make an ideal present for any child of the appropriate age to help spread awareness and understanding about the difficulties some may face. I asked Jude if he thought the story could have been improved in any way and he said it was perfect – therefore, it is entirely appropriate that I give it the perfect award of five stars.
The Dinosaur Who Lost Her Voice is a beautiful story about a dinosaur named Milly Jo. After a tree falls onto her she loses her voice which makes her and all the dinosaurs sad when they can't hear her sing but they soon find a way to raise everyone's spirits and for Milly Jo to make the most of her talent.
This is a great story to show how we can choose to focus on the positives or negatives and it's inspiring to see Milly Jo trying her best to find a way to continue enjoying singing without a voice. The children loved the story and wanted Milly Jo to get her voice back so it was nice for them to see that you can always find good in a situation. I liked how we got to see how much Milly Jo achieved without a voice as it also showed the children that you don't need a voice to be able to achieve things. We have had children in the past that don't speak and this has always confused the children so seeing Milly Jo in a similar situation is a nice comparison.
The illustrations are beautiful and the children loved seeing all the dinosaurs. The colours on each page are lovely and it is nice to see the colours on each page matching the feeling of the story with some of the sadder pages being darker and happy pages brighter. Along with the emotions on the dinosaurs faces this is lovely to help us understand how the dinosaurs feel.
This is such a fun rhyming story that the children loved and will inspire children and show them they can do anything, even when things may seem bad there's always a way like Milly Jo discovers!
What a joyous book this is! A beautiful story told through rhyme, but what I particularly liked and what sets it apart for me is its honest and thought-provoking ending. The idea that things don’t always go our way and things can’t always be fixed, but it’s how you respond to adversity is an important message for children to learn. The story of Milly Jo and how she overcomes losing her beautiful singing voice conveys this in a gentle and accessible way. The illustrations are absolutely stunning! I just loved the expressions on the dinosaurs’ faces. A lovely book that can expect lots of re-reads in this household!
The Dinosaur Who Lost Her Voice is a lovely book featuring a Dinosaur named Milly Jo who sings to all of her friends. until one stormy night, a tree falls onto Milly Jo's neck, ruining her voice. The story continues with Milly Jo teaching her friend to sing. The book is full of rhyme, there is an emphasis in the text when to change your reading and tone. It also teaches the children resilience as they can see that Milly Jo is capable of changing her viewpoint and focusing on the positive rather than the negative.
It is also wonderfully illustrated, full of empathy and would be pitched at children aged 3 - 5.
Really heartwarming story about a dinosaur who loves to sing but loses her voice. It’s a great book for showing children that although life doesn’t always go to plan, with a positive attitude, help of good friends and a bit of patience we can overcome obstacles and discover new talents. Love the illustrations and beautiful message 💖📚
This is a brilliant, reassuring children's book, told in rhyme, about overcoming setbacks and the value of having a positive outlook. The illustrations are gorgeous and the story captivating. A great addition to any bookshelf.
Lovely story, deals briefly with disabilities, with a light touch and gentle hand. Milly Jo doesn't let losing her voice stop her from loving her music or friends.
A beautiful book, telling the story of Milly Jo a dinosaur who had to find other ways to enjoy singing after she loses her voice. The illustrations are gorgeous by Francesca Gambatesa and the rhyming story is funny and flows perfectly across the pages as she supports her friends.
