Canyon of Lies

Rate this book

Something strange and deadly is happening in the desert of southern Utah. When ancient prophecy clashes with modern fanatics, can Nora prevent more death?

Nora Abbott risks her career at Loving Earth Trust on a film project to convince Congress to expand Canyonlands National Park. But someone is desperate to keep the secrets of the land hidden. When her best friend and director of the film is found dead, Nora isn’t convinced it was an accident. Nora’s Hopi kachina messenger has vanished and now it looks as though the man she’s finally allowed herself to love, has left her, too.

As Nora uncovers an unlikely intersection of ancient Hopi legends, a secret polygamist sect, and one of the world’s richest men, she is drawn deeper into danger. Her mother’s surprising past holds the key to the clash of cultures, but will Nora put all the pieces together in time to prevent disaster? Set in the iconic red rocks of Moab, Utah, Nora races to discover what really lies beyond the stars.

Canyon of Lies is the third book in the Nora Abbott mystery series, dealing with mystic Hopi culture, environmental issues, and murder. If you like Tony Hillerman, William Kent Krueger, and Margaret Coel, you’ll love this series.

CANYON OF LIES "...is a fine standalone murder mystery and a marvelous addition to her series. If you enjoy the Nevada Barr crime stories this one will be right up your hiking trail.” Fresh Fiction

Shannon Baker

Shannon Baker writes mysteries about strong women in dangerous situations. Her books are set in the iconic landscapes of the American West, from the Colorado Rockies to the Nebraska prairies, to the deserts of southern Arizona. Baker spent 20 years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1, and too few years living on Colorado’s front range. Her dark suspense, The Desert Behind Me, is a 2019 Winner of the New Mexico/Arizona Book Award.
Seconds before quitting writing forever and taking up competitive drinking, Shannon was voted Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer’s 2014 Writer of the Year and, buoyed with that confidence, continued to write, earning another RMFW Writer of the Year nod in 2017-18. Shannon makes her home in Tucson where she enjoys cocktails by the pool, breathtaking sunsets, a crazy Weimaraner, and killing people (in the pages of her books).

A lover of the outdoors, she can be found backpacking in the Rockies, traipsing to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, skiing mountains and plains, kayaking lakes, river running, hiking, cycling, and scuba diving whenever she gets the chance. Arizona sunsets notwithstanding, Baker is, and always will be, a Nebraska Husker, heartbreaking as the last two decades have been. Go Big Red.

An energizing read!

This book was another hair-raising adventure! I read about the Mormon cults and the lady who was killed because of her alternative lifestyle. I was hooked on the storyline. Shannon Baker has delivered the goods!

THE UTAH DESERT

This book has about as many twists as as a Utah desert canyon. About the time I thought I had it figured out, there was a change that made it obvious I knew nothing.
It was glorious.
