Jean-Philippe Lauer was an eminent French Egyptologist who excavated extensively at Saqqara. The sit of Saqqara is essentially a 4700 year old necropolis with the first burials being done early in the Old Kingdom, in the 3rd Dynasty. Mastabas and pyramids abound and the site was used for some 2500 years or so. In his book, Saqqara, he not only details the history of the site, but also chronicles the excavations and discoveries his team made. Published in 1976 and in hardcover, it is a fascinating read and a look into the life of an Egyptologist specializing in the Old Kingdom. He spends a lot of time discussing the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser and the polymath Imhotep, the architect, high priest, and vizier of Djoser. Also of note is his excavations of the pyramid complex of Teti. It is a fascinating read but a bit dry at times but is recommended for those Egyptophiles who dwell amongst us.
