Is Jesus the Christ? Is He my savior and redeemer? I resisted these questions and rebelled against the Methodist Church in high school. In college I followed Yogananda, an Indian guru. As a student at Brigham Young University, my friends convinced me to pray to know if Jesus was my Lord. I rejected God's answer to my prayer. Later I found hope in Reverend Sun Myung Moon’s guidance. Thirty years after I started my spiritual quest, missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ found me. Again, I prayed and this time I accepted the Lord’s invitation to, “Come follow me!” My wife joined me in making a covenant with Lord and we found the joy and freedom in Christ that was missing in our lives. I believe the Lord knocks but He is not going to kick the door down! Free will involves making choices. We tend to over think the free gift of salvation. We make our path long and convoluted by our own choices. I grew up in this same town and knew many of the same people. My husband and I were married in that Methodist church. My path was a bit shorter than Tom's. Sometimes you just need to be still and hear the Lord. This is an incredible and detailed account of one man's search to find his own answers.
I was hesitant at first to read this book, to be honest. I do know this author casually, but it's sometimes intimidating to read something that is dear to a person and then give feedback on it! But I was fascinated by this journey of faith. I didn't know any of these stories and it really kept my attention. I loved learning about religions I had never even heard of before, and since we share the same religion currently, it was neat to see his journey to find that faith. I was constantly impressed by his optimism and willingness to do whatever was asked of him by his faith leaders.
Read like a journal. What a treasure for his family! After a few chapters of history, I was looking forward to stories and interchanges of life that would move me and inspire me. Instead, I was left to find those inspirations in the chronological journalism. The chronicle of events lasted the entire book, which was tedious for me and not what I would normally pick up to read. A surprise treat was that I knew many of the people in the book because I am from Poughkeepsie, NY!
This is a fascinating book about one man's journey to find peace and meaning in his life and also a testament to the power of God's love for each of His sons and daughters.
I enjoyed reading this autobiography of Tom Bower’s personal spiritual journey over a span of fifty years. Quite insightful and poignant at times when he shares intimate details of his personal struggles to connect with God and find the Truth.
