The Pyre Chronicles: Adria: Volume One
Bound by blood, by magic and unfortunate circumstances, Adria finds herself on the run, a lot. Escaping those that tortured her young soul only lands her in another predicament. A blood contract with a group of mercenaries, she has no choice, no free will. When events cause her to return, she learns there are things far bigger than her freedom. The truth. When she is forced to team up with some unexpected allies, she may just begin to uncover her identity.
“Who’s doorstep did I happen across ma’am?” My head hurts, it’s spinning. I’m confused. I want to go home.
“He runs a tavern. He has girls there. He makes them do things I wouldn’t wish upon anyone especially one as young as you. You’re a boy. You’ll be his help. Understood?” The kindness in her dull eyes do not go unnoticed in my groggy state.
“Yes ma’am.” I am thankful.
“What is your name? Do you remember that?” I can see curiosity spark, lighting a small twinkle in her deep grays.
“My name is Adria.”

Enjoyed this greatly! Very inventive storytelling and I like the host of nonbinary characters that made it realistic, inventive and left me hungry for more.

Caveat: I'm not a super big fan of fantasy and I don't read a lot of YA.
Wow. The world building in this is extensive and totally competes with GRRMartin in terms of complexity, contextuality and depth.
If you like urban fantasy for its current attitudes and writing, this is your book, but to be clear, it's NOT urban fantasy at all. It's like if you took an alternate reality world that developed/evolved linguistically with our own, so the characters just speak like normal people, but they're dealing with magic and freezing time and really interesting philosophical and ethical questions. This is a wow, can't put it down, can't wait to read the next in the series kind of book. Like, whoa, I think I want to read it again because I feel like I missed 40% more cool stuff happening in the background.
Don't miss this one.

Just when it was really getting interesting, the book ends. Lots of language which is why I can't give this 5 stars, it was just to much for me.

A colorful story of a group of magic wielders traveling to confront the big bad picking up new friends (and traitors) along the way.......
The descriptions the Author uses in this book were incredible... She paints a vivid picture. The imagination behind different characters and species was very impressive.
I think the author has written a very unique character in Adria, that she knows no love and has such a robotic outlook on things it will be interesting to hopefully see Jet break through her shields.
The beginning has some interestingly written time jumps giving you different glimpses of Adria and what she has had to overcome, i did find it a little off putting no one tells Adria anything the few times she asks, when she does receive cryptic answers she doesn't press the matter just carries on... Anticipation for the big reveal?... I do personally prefer Knowing about characters then getting an unexpected twist rather than not knowing anything as it makes scenarios and characters a little unrealistic.
What i wasn't so keen on and its a real niggle for me i hate being dropped in a world with no explanation (Amazing as the world was) is it earth? as it has coffee??? is it another planet?? who are the other species? i would have liked a little more background on them... I think the book was a little to short to encompass everything.
Still as first books go it has piqued my interest..... Hopefully the next installment sheds a little more light... A good read!
